Did you know there is an ancient form of abdominal massage practiced for centuries (or maybe even millenia) in Central America, Africa and China? It's Mayan abdominal massage, a technique used for treating PMS, uterine fibroids, varicose veins, low back pain, diminished libido, period-related migraines and frequent urination in women as well as providing prostate and digestive benefits for men.
Midwives and native healers have cared for women using massage, herbs, and prayer throughout history. Don Elijio, who died in 1996 at the age of 103 but did shamanic healing until he was 98, stressed that the uterus is a woman's center. "If the uterus is not in proper position and in good health," he would say, "nothing in her life will be right. She will be as out of balance as her uterus in her physical, emotional, and spiritual life."
A displaced uterus can be caused by a number of common things (like wearing high heels, chronic constipation, carrying young children on your hip or high impact exercise), and according to the publication Fit Yoga, symptoms include weak, tired legs, numb feet, sore heels when walking, varicose veins, low back pain, low sex drive and various digestive problems among others. Rosita has studied with several traditional healers after Don Elijio, in addition to more American, scientific training.
"My favorite thing is applying science to ancient traditions" she says. "After my apprenticeship with Don Elijio, I spent another 10 years studying biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy to come up with a systematic approach to uterine healing."

"Before 1915, medical texts talked about misplaced wombs," Rosita tells the magazine. "The tragedy is that this healing tradition is not being passed down. We're being brainwashed that 'old-fashioned' ways aren't useful. In Belize, we don't have infertility problems or C-sections."
Rosita uses the statistic that fertility treatments offer just a 30% success rate on the whole while abdominal-massage practitioners who combine their therapy with herbs report a 50-70% success rate among patients. "This kind of massage is one of the most vital practices to hold onto, insists Rosita. To lose it, she says, "would be literally throwing out the baby with the bathwater."
