666
Nothing bad happened!
by Martine Jeanne Craughley
When the 6th of June was nearly upon us in 2006, fear-mongering, hysteria and
hoopla, that translates to 06/06/06 or 666, made the news. People were
afraid, very afraid. The Internet was afire with predictions of
onslaughts of evil, and sermons forecasting the ending of the Earth
while invoking Revelation's prophecy. It's been reported that even in
comparatively dour and atheistic Great Britain, near-term pregnant
women were having their labor induced to avoid having Satan's baby on
06/06/06
With a small portion of the Western world quaking in anticipation and fear that this would herald the beginning of the End of Times, now looking back on the day, it's worth doing a little skeptical questioning. What exactly happened on June 6th one or two hundred years ago to set a precedence for this fear? Actually very little, minor historical personages were born and died, ballgames were played, storms left devastation in their wake. It's pretty much the same level of riveting interest as any other day on the calendar. Sadly, for those looking to see the powers of the Devil revealed, no awesome display of All Out Evil occurred on 6/06/06.
The numbers were wrong
Interestingly, there is no historical record of public fear of June 6th in prior centuries. Yet, every hundred years the sixth day of the sixth month in the sixth year of the new century is written like this: 06/06/06. Except that it isn't - we're pressed for time in this screaming-fast Internet age, and so we abbreviated June 6th, 2006 as 06/06/06 to save a few seconds. In earlier times, a hundred and more years ago, the skill of writing was an achievement of the learned. Those that could write did so carefully and elegantly, with an expensive, handcrafted pen, imported India ink and a thick ink blotter. Writing was a serious, time-consuming affair and cultured people were judged by the beauty and refinement of their penmanship. In the past, the date would have been written as June 6, 1906 or June 6, 1806 with lots of scroll work and flourishes.
Also, those who practice numerology are at pains to point out that June 6th did not equal 666, it was 06/06/2006, which would parse out as 6 + 6 + 2 + 6 = 20, then the zero is struck, giving final result of 2. This number is hardly the harbinger of evil, because the number 2 carries the meaning of The Most High, Duality or Truth, depending on the interpreter.
Just another day
So, was June 6th, ever a cause for worry? Not really! It was a day filled with the ordinary perils and joys of any other day. Nevertheless, you might want to pay heed to this frightening fact noted in the Online Times UK, "...the numerological significance of 'Fox' (television). As one contributor to Arianna Huffington's blog pointed out F is the sixth letter of the alphabet, O is the 15th letter (1+5=6) and X is the 24th letter (2+4=6). Could Fox be the studio of the Beast?" So there are signs of Evil on earth all around us, as are supposed signs of the Apocalypse! But the date June 6th isn't among them.
