Get Some Sleep!

Feng Shui tips to sleep better

by S.K. Smith
Sleep. We need it in order to function optimally when we're awake. Yet somehow, when life gets busy, sleep is one of the first things we sacrifice. We tell ourselves that we'll make up for it tomorrow or the next day or over the weekend, but we never seem to really catch up. That's because sleep depravation (though you may tell yourself you're not sleep deprived, just working hard), is cumulative, and nothing barring a regular sleep schedule is really going to get you back on track and feeling your best!

But what if you can't sleep? If you're someone who has trouble settling down after a long day or tosses and turns when the lights go out for any reason, the ancient art of placement (Feng Shui) may have some answers for you!

There are several elements that are absolutely key to a properly balanced bedroom (and a good night's sleep) according to Lillian Too and Terah Kathryn Collins, both of whom are recognized experts in the field. First, it's important to remember that the bedroom is a place for relaxing, not for working, exercising or - gasp - watching TV!

What does that mean to you?

If it's at all possible, rid your bedroom of any work elements. Your desk, your computer, your files (and any items not related to resting or romance) do not have a place here! And that includes your television! If you simply have to have these things in your bedroom for lack of space, shield them from your view in the evenings with a screen or curtain. The idea behind this is that we can be easily distracted by what we can see or energy we can feel. Thereby, we must create a space for rest, recovery (and romance, but that's a different topic!), if we want to get it!

On that same note, keep anything troubling out of your bedroom! For instance, a friend of mine who has been dealing with being overextended financially had difficulty sleeping. Then she realized that she'd been tossing her credit card-filled purse on the other side of her king sized bed and forgotten about it… only her subconscious had not forgotten. After tossing and turning, she took the purse out of the room and presto! She was able to fall asleep. If nothing else, the symbolic action of setting aside her money concerns enabled her to let them go for at least long enough to catch some much needed shut eye. In Feng Shui all things have a time and space (as well as a place!), and so should it be in your day to day life.

Once your bedroom is cleared of hectic or problematic energy, consider the layout. Feng Shui is all about being at your most peaceful at all times in all you do, and that goes for the bedroom too! Your bed should always be placed where you can see the door, without being directly in front of it.

"Not being able to see the door is the equivalent of being vulnerable to the enemy," Collins says.

Likewise, by staying out of the direct line of the door, you maintain a level of protection if anyone (or any negative energy) were to enter.

Some other things to keep in mind:

According to Feng Shui principles, you should try to avoid sleeping next to a window - or at least make sure it's curtained at night so that light doesn't filter in and disturb the energy around you the next morning.

You may also want to consider a solid headboard, placed firmly against a wall, if you don't already have one. This gives you a firm anchor in sleep and beyond since sleep is where you rejuvenate and summon your energies for living.

And when it comes to colors, steer clear of anything too loud or overpowering. If you must use them, you should also balance any cool colors (blues and greens), with warmer tones to promote relaxation and a good libido.

Lastly, if you're among the many whose life overall could use some slowing down (the hectic pace of modern life can be tough no matter who you are), consider placing the head of your bed to the West. In Feng Shui this slows life down. It's considered optimal for stressed-out adults and hyperactive children.
