As the premiere of the Fall 2009 schedule approaches, it's no wonder that the paranormal ride is far from over! Not only will a number of psychic-related favorites return, two new shows will aim to make their mark by exploring otherworldly occurrences.
From A&E's Paranormal State to CBS's The Ghost Whisperer and NBC's Medium (which moves to CBS this fall), television has given us more than a few recent opportunities to glimpse what it's like to be a psychic.
We've seen fictional characters and real-life seers communicate with the other side, help solve crimes and even struggle with the complications of their gifts in their personal lives. It all adds up to some of the most fascinating, entertaining and occasionally terrifying storytelling on TV.
Here's a little bit about what you can expect from the latest entries into the psychic TV genre.
Flash Forward
What if you thought you saw your future? That's the question at the heart of ABC's new drama Flash Forward - only it's not one or two people having what may or may not be a psychic experience. It's the entire world! When a mysterious global event causes everyone on the planet to black out simultaneously for two minutes and 17 seconds, each one of the characters (and presumably, everyone on earth) gets a glimpse of their lives in the future. Then, just as eerily, they all wake up, wondering if what they saw will actually happen… Was it a psychic moment? Can they change what they saw? And what does it all mean?
Intended as a companion piece for the final season of Lost (and based on a novel by Canadian author Robert J. Sawyer), Flash Forward promises to explore many of the fascinating themes associated with what visions mean - and the role that free will has in realizing our destiny… amidst some fast-paced action, hot-and-heavy romance and difficult-to-decide dilemmas, of course!
Past Life
Inspired by the book "The Reincarnationist" by M.J. Rose, Past Life is a new drama series (on Fox) about an unlikely pair of detectives. The difference is that gifted psychologist (and Soul Scientist) Kate McGill and her cynical ex-NYPD partner Price Whatley don't investigate your run-of-the-mill crimes. Their job, rather, is to uncover whether or not what is happening to you today is the result of who you were before - in a past life! Dealing with levels of human consciousness and the questions surrounding human behavior "that science can't begin to explain," each week McGill uses her natural gifts for reading people and employs regression therapy - while Price works his detective skills to get to the bottom of the situation. Together, they set the present straight for their troubled clients.
Described by Fox as a "fast-paced emotional thrill ride," one thing's for sure from the previews: Past Life offers something for fans of sci-fi and for psychic believers.
If you're looking to add even more psychic action to your life, these new fall series may be just what you are destined to watch.
