Understanding Your Daily Focus
Do you ever have a left-over night at your house? Growing up, I actually looked forward to those nights when my mum would pull out all the various bits and pieces that were left from previous meals and make a smorgasbord on our usually boring kitchen table.
In writing this blog I have come across several amazing quotes and have had some ideas that just didn’t fit into one niche very easily, so I simply stash them away and go back to them every so often to see if they will work for whatever I am writing at the moment. So, my dear fellow Seekers, this week’s daily focus is going to be a literary smorgasbord of meditations that are done waiting for the perfect topic and are ready to nourish us in their own ways.

“The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.” –Dean Ornish
Although we all need time for and to ourselves, being connected with other people is something that we all need. Even the most introverted of us still need to feel as if we are part of the whole sometimes. Just going out and being around people, even if we don’t talk to anyone, can give us a charge and reinvigorate our energy. Today’s word is Cohesion.

“The simplest things are overlooked. And yet, it is the simplest things that are the most essential.” –Thomas Lloyd Qualls
Have you ever walked into a hotel or a family member’s home and felt uncomfortable with how fancy everything was, afraid to touch or even sit down on anything? I remember visiting my favorite aunt’s home as a child and looking longingly into the front room, wishing that I could go in and sit on the velvet sofa that was in there. But it was a room for show, not for living in. Now, downstairs was nothing near as fancy, it was a simple area with a TV room, the spare kitchen, and dinner table, but we kids had the best times in that space! Simplicity can help to restore a sense of balance and peace that the most ornate environments can never achieve. Today’s word is Simplicity.

“Life is not a solo act. It’s a huge collaboration.” –Tim Gunn
As individuals we can achieve amazing things, and when we are alone, we usually have the best chance of learning who we are at our core. But when we put our hearts, hands, and minds together with others we can achieve the unbelievable. Life is best lived when we find the balance of quiet personal time and time spent in conjunction with others, all working towards one goal. Today’s word is Harmony.

“A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down.” –Arnold H. Glasgow
Finding a person that you can be yourself with is an amazing gift. To be able to share both good and bad times and know that you can let down your walls can make life so much easier. Good friends are able to find the balance of being supportive and uplifting, all while keeping us grounded and being honest with us when we are about to do something detrimental to our success. That honesty can sometimes be hard to swallow, but when said with love, even painful truths are easier to digest and the ties between us become stronger. Today’s word is Kinship.

“People no longer live by sun and moon, by wind and stars, but by some slyly contrived conventions known as clocks and calendars.” –Matthew Goldman
Time is a man-made construct and although there is something to be said for organization and having the world utilize a common thread, there isn’t much room for our own personal clocks and calendars. Each of us has our own rhythm and pace, and when we ignore that and try to force a different set of these things on ourselves we quickly find that we are tired, short tempered, and lose sight of who we are and what matters. Even though we can’t simply ignore the date on the wall we can still do our best to follow our natural rhythms whenever it is possible, if only to recharge our batteries. Today’s word is Flowing.

“Creativity involves breaking out of expected patterns in order to look at things in a different way.” –Edward de Bono
I think people who are creative are the luckiest people on earth! People with creative blood or minds seem to have a far easier time foreseeing potential issues, noticing ways out of problems, and just have an easier time expressing who they are and what is important to them. Being creative doesn’t mean that you paint, sing, or write either. Sometimes it is simply how you look at the world around you. What is your creative super-power and how can it supercharge your life? Today’s word is Actualize.

“Dogs do speak but only to those who know how to listen.” –Orhan Pamuk
Sadly, many people simply discredit the intellect of others, both of the animal and human varieties, simply because they are different from them. Listening to the unspoken words of our four-legged friends can help us to better hear the unspoken needs of our two-legged ones. We have a tendency to rely too much on words, and in doing so only hear half the conversation, if we are lucky. Stop, watch, and really hear what everyone around you is saying and you will find yourself a much sought-after conversation partner! Today’s word is Unspoken.
