My fiancé of a year and a half, David, died in June. I have felt his presense on multiple occasions, in multiple ways, however, I am confused about a dream I had recently. He came to me in a different body. He said in his voice, “Hi, Baby, it’s me.” I looked at him and saw very colorful tatoos on his arms under his sleeves, and under his shirt collar I could just make out a tatoo that said Army. He was a little shorter, and had lighter straight hair instead of curly.
I couldn’t get a good look at his eyes though because his hair kept falling into them. But I knew it was him. I said, “I thought you died.” He said “Nah, I just had to go away for a little while.” I asked him what he had been doing and he asnwered he had done some time in the military to which I replied “I see that,” and pointed out the tattoo. We both thought it was funny because he would never get a tattoo. It was very quick but I don’t know if he was just being funny, like himself, or if he was trying to tell me something. I sort of woke up and thanked him for visiting me and fell back to sleep. A little later, I felt something hit me in the back and on my side at the same time. Like a tennis ball or apple fell out of the sky. There was nothing there. What is that about?
Dear Julia,
When people we’ve lost come to us in our dreams, they don’t always present in the same physical form that we knew them in life. Sometimes they appear younger, other times they appear as they were in another incarnation. The physical form doesn’t really matter, because you know who they are, regardless of how they appear.
The scenario painted by your dream is a combination of your fiancé visiting you, and your subconscious perception of yourself and your life. Losing someone is always hard, and learning to live with the loss can be challenging. Tattoos always tell a story. They are records of moments in life for the living, and moments of lives for the dead. The Army tattoo is particularly significant for both of you, as it represents structure and order in life. The tattoo was on him because in death, he found understanding and answers. It was clearly visible to you because you need to focus on putting things back into order in your life.
As far as whatever hit you in the back and your arm – I don’t know what that was. The dream in it’s entirety has a lot of symbolism and representation of you moving forward in your life. You have your fiancé’s permission and encouragement. He will always be with you, and continue to drop by for years to come.
I am very sorry for your loss.
