9 Ways to Rise Above the Winter Blues

The late-winter period can start to feel like a dreary time for many people. We’ve been braving the cold, wind, rain, or snow for a couple of months now. It can seem like a long trek from here on out until spring arrives.

Yet you can choose to be uplifted even in the darkest of days. Here are a few suggestions to help lift your spirits as we move through the last stages of the winter season.

1. Acknowledge the beauty of the changing of seasons. Easier said than done, right? Not quite. Try to spend some quiet meditative time reflecting on the change of the seasons. When you get down to it, it’s really your choice how you choose to view the world around you. Try to shift into an attitude of appreciation for the beauty and stillness of the winter season.

2. Allow yourself to hibernate. It’s OK to slow down. After periods of high action, it’s a kindness to yourself to allow time to process and absorb. Just as everything in nature has an ebb and flow, so do we. Think of quieter times as an opportunity to restore balance in your life.

3. If the winter days are making you feel unusually sad and downhearted, consider researching seasonal affective disorder. It may help to explore light therapy. Also, even if you work at home, try leaving the house even for a few minutes each day. Spending time outdoors in natural light is important to balance melatonin levels, which could benefit both your sleep patterns and your mood.

4. A nice adjunct to light therapy can be color therapy. Imagine what it would be like to wake up every day and the first thing you see is a room filled with bright, cheery colors. The energy and vibration of colors can really affect our state of mind. I experienced this firsthand when my husband and I moved into our first place—a basement apartment in the Lower East Side of New York City, railroad style, with one tiny window and an exposed pipe running overhead. We bought a bunch of cheap fabrics from the garment district, and soon our little cave was festooned in bright red, yellow, and violet. Made it much more cheery and fun, especially during a cold NYC winter!

5. Reach out to people. Even if the weather is inclement, there are many ways to touch base with someone you care about. This will not only benefit you, but the folks you connect to! Try calling an elderly family member you haven’t spoken to in a while.  Get a webcam and set up Skype to have a face-to-face chat with friends and family that live far away.

6. If the weather is manageable, get out of the house and do something fun and different, either on your own or with your family. Having a change of scenery can shift your mind away from lower-energy thoughts, and stimulate your imagination. Author and creativity coach Julia Cameron calls this “filling the well.”

7. Focus on the present moment. I always return to the works of Eckhart Tolle for inspiration for living in the now.  Imagine how it would feel to release what happened in the past (whether good or bad), release anticipating the supposedly “better” circumstances that may come in the future, and simply enjoy this exact moment, right now.

8. Connect to source for renewed peace and happiness. This quote from Wayne Dyer is a powerful reminder: “You are eternally connected to this presence, your Source, the power of love that never abandons you and never runs dry. You can rely on this source if you remind yourself that it includes you at all times. Heaven is a state of mind, not a location. It is always safe to let go and let God.”

9. Try speaking to an empath who can understand your feelings. Psychic Ariel ext. 9775 offers uplifting, hopeful readings, and Psychic Devyn ext. 5303 also offers a renewed sense of hope.
