It’s Not All About the Food
Thanksgiving is upon us, a time to get together with friends and family, and give thanks for our blessings and the good people we share them with. It can also be a time of angst and anxiety, if you’ve been trying to eat right and you’re worried about the possibility of sabotaging your efforts.
Be Prepared
Stick to your routine as much as possible, which means eating, sleeping and exercising. If you think you’re too busy getting ready for the upcoming holiday, realize that you need to do all of those things anyway, so there’s no need to deviate from your normal schedule too much, if at all. Disrupting your daily flow isn’t going to help anyone, especially you.
On top of the dietary concerns you’re already worried about, there’s always some sort of family-related stress that comes with putting so many people in one room, and then of course there are the mean-wells who can’t understand your concern with eating healthy food on a day that’s obviously made for eating. This Thanksgiving, vow to do it differently and cut yourself a break. Don’t let the stress get to you. Stressing will just make you eat and more than you normally would. Easier said than done, you say? Not really.
When you invite someone over, invite them to bring food or dessert. If they can’t think of anything, take the opportunity to suggest a recipe of your own, something healthy and delicious that everyone will love. The more people you invite, the less cooking you have to worry about, just make sure they make enough.
Enjoy the Day
You are surrounded by friends and family that you love, so don’t spend all of your time in the kitchen. Enlist the help of anyone who offers. Give everyone something to do and it’ll all be done in no time. Even if they don’t know where everything goes, tell yourself it doesn’t matter. They want to spend time relaxing with you too.
“There are many ways to celebrate, consider if you may need to release familiar obligations if they do not bring you joy, in order to find your own space to create holiday happiness!” – Yemaya ext. 5143
Leave No Temptations
With so much food and so many good things to choose from, allow yourself to indulge a little. It would be impossible for anyone to be so brave as to positively say no to any and all Thanksgiving dishes that are counter to their progress. If you’re on an eating plan, prepare and allow for a little extra this and that. And even if you eat more than you should, get yourself back on the healthy eating track tomorrow. It is, after all only one day. If you want to “make up” eating too much, take an extra-long walk and extra mile, drink a little extra water. There’s nothing you can do that is so bad it can’t be undone. If you’re worried about having leftovers tempting you, make sure you divide up what’s left and have everyone take home some food. If it’s not there, you won’t eat it.
Most importantly, treat yourself with kindness, and enjoy Thanksgiving and the people around you.
“Food is a wonderful healer. Thanksgiving is a celebration of sharing. Cooking and preparing food for or with one another is a great way to heal oneself by healing others. If you live far from you family or don’t have family consider hosting an ‘Orphan Thanksgiving.’ You know other people who have no where to go or be that day. Invite them and welcome anyone they may know to join in. Make it a potluck to cut down on expense! You can do the same thing for Christmas!” – Chloe ext. 9421
