The Truth About Having the Last Word

Having the Last Word

What Does Having the Last Word Actually Get You?

Do you feel like you need to have the last word in a conversation, fight or during a breakup? Have you noticed that when you are on the phone with a company representative, they always get the last word? The last word could be something small, like “goodbye,” or something huge like the end of an all-out war over Twitter or Facebook. At this point in my life, I have gracefully waved the right to have the last word. I’ve decided to let whoever is talking to me about whatever they’re talking about have the last word instead.

The Need to be in Control

When you insist on having the last word, it means that you like feeling in control of a situation. You’ve probably experienced this kind of control at the hands of a loved one, boss, coworker or friend. Or perhaps, you are the controlling one. Regardless, it’s kind of like stomping your foot to show that it’s your way or no way at all.

As conversations get heated, so do the words used in them and it’s likely you’ll hurt someone you love just to prove your point. This can really damage a relationship, leaving it broken and often beyond repair. Perhaps it’s better to put your foot in your mouth and move on instead.

Talking Under Your Breath

Talking under your breath can be a great way to keep your cool—and get the last word—just as long as no one hears you. If they do, you’ll have some explaining to do and that’s pretty embarrassing. What a pretzel knot to get out of!

It’s a Never-Ending Discussion

When you have to have the last word, it’s a never-ending discussion. At some point, don’t you wish it would end, go away and stop? When the words keep coming, you might end up defending yourself, and you’ll have even more points to bring up. It really never ends!

For some people, it is their nature to have the last word and if you’re that person and you’re talking to someone who is also that kind of person, it’s a never-ending battle. I often recall the last words of those I have loved and lost and with teary eyes. I am happy that I was able to keep my mouth shut and let them talk.

Make it Memorable!

Here are some famous last words. Thankfully, there was no one there to interrupt them….

“I am perplexed. Satan get out.”  – Aleister Crowley (famous occultist)

“Hey, fellas! How about this for a headline for tomorrow’s paper? ‘French Fries!'” – James French (convicted murderer, sentenced to the electric chair)

“LSD, 100 micrograms I.M.” – Aldous Huxley (author) to his wife.

“Tomorrow, I shall no longer be here.” – Nostradamus (French apothecary and seer)

If you are going to have the last word, be sure to make it one to remember. It should be something of importance.

Buddha bless,

As always a great article from Quinn! Never one for talking for talking sake, you are always logical and consistent in your knowledge 🙂 Am I getting older or do I now have more confidence in my self to be able to let other people have the last word, I guess in my mind I know that the universe has a way of levelling people who think they are better, having the last word is for the Insecure or frightened. I am more frightened of getting it wrong than I am in not having the last word 🙂

This message is for Teva….Roberts Dad died this morning and I was with him the day before.
He had a dream about a hugh bumblebee…the day before he had to go to the hospital. I got
to be with him a lot before he died. He was a very special Dad. I spent many hours with him
helping with his feet. Now to see how my relationship with Robert will be. The controlling
ways will have to be apart of the past. I am leaving him alone to make the choices he needs
to make. It is let go and let God.
Thank you Teva for being a friend to me.
