The run up to Halloween is upon us! In less than a week we will be celebrating the Gaelic festival of Samhain, or Halloween, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. This is the time when it was believed that the veil between the seen and unseen, the living and spiritual worlds, was at its thinnest and people would reach out to the spirit realm to gain answers and insights into their lives and futures, communicate with their loved ones, and also honor and remember them.

We aren’t all that different from our ancestors, are we? We would all like to be able to have one more conversation with a loved one who has passed, or speak with our Guardian Divine Intelligences to ask for guidance so that we can make the right choices.

Those who came before us are always with us, whether the veil is thin or not, and communicating with them is no more difficult than looking deep into ourselves and using our imagination. This week’s Daily Focus reflects on Halloween, our links with our ancestors, the thinning of the veil, and a bit of magic.

October 26

As we get older, we become grounded, set in our ways, and a bit more practical and lose sight of the power of imagination. But honestly, where would mankind be if everyone stopped dreaming and imagining the impossible and finding ways to make it happen? We would still be somewhere in the dark ages! Even though we can’t live in our imagination we can look at challenges in our lives with a creative approach and perhaps find new ways to get over them in a way that allows us to grow. Today’s word is Envision.

Why do children see magic in everything? Because they look for it. They aren’t afraid to take the leap and believe that they can fly. They see nothing wrong with talking and playing with fairies, elves, and little people – so they do. It’s because of this openness that they see the magic in the first buds of spring, or the patterns in a snowflake, and the goodness in people that we sometimes miss because we see what is only visible to our eyes and not our senses. We can relearn how to see that same magic that our children see, if we are willing to look for it. Today’s word is Searching.

October 29

One night a year we allow ourselves to be whatever we want to be, but why do we have to limit that to just one night? No, I’m not advocating dressing up as a zombie all year long, but life is so much easier and more fulfilling when we don’t wear so many masks. Living a life that allows us to be ourselves is exhilarating and allowing ourselves to grow into who we want to be, rather than someone else’s desires for us is a true magical transformation! So, this month go ahead and dress up as your favorite spooky, funny, or sexy character, but when all is said and done, have the masks for the party and leave them at home the rest of the year. Today’s word is Real.

Tomorrow night marked the end of the year for the ancient Celts, and just as we do on December 31, it is a great time to look back on what we have learned, accomplished, and even what we fell short of so that we can plan our path for the rest of the year. I actually like to do this now rather than in December, simply because it follows the harvest and it feels like the right time to take that kind of personal inventory. As you get ready for the fun of Halloween night, take a few moments to review how far you have come and make any needed adjustments for your life as you see it for the rest of this year. We have to understand where we came from in order to know which road to take next. Today’s word is Reflection.

Do you remember the magic and excitement that you felt as the month moved towards Halloween? My girls started planning out their costumes in August! When we are really little we may or may not understand the link between Halloween and magic but none the less we feel it. We sense it in the air, hear it in the crackle of the leaves, and smell it in the pumpkins we carve. We don’t equate it with good or bad, we just relish in it. Tonight, try to find that amazing feeling of magic that this day brought to you when you were a child and allow yourself to see how magic of many kinds is with you no matter what the date. Today’s word is Magic!

November 1

All Saint’s Day and Día de Los Muertos are days that have historically and culturally been set aside to honour those who have passed. Many people set up ancestral altars of pictures and mementos for those they loved as a way to remember them. It is in remembering where we came from and all those from whom we are descended that we can honour them year round, rather than only doing so once a year.
