Understanding Your Daily Focus
Here we are, my dear fellow seekers; the week before the onslaught of winter holidays! And while they each may stem from different beginnings and have different meanings that are celebrated, one aspect seems to be true no matter what: the importance of being together and reaching out to those who may not have anyone to be with.
Those ties of community are always there but seem to be more palpable at this time of year. This week we take our daily focus meditations from that need for connectivity and the sense of community that is such a major part of the holidays.
December 14
“When every hand that you shake is like a warm embrace it could only be one sweet place: home and the heartland.” –Lisa Kelly
Coming together, especially if you no longer live near your family, is a big part of the holiday season. Sometimes that warmth can come from seeing people you’ve missed, but just as frequently it comes from a smell, a particular food, or even a song, so that even if we can’t be there in person, we can still be there in spirit. What envelopes you in a warm embrace, and how can you maintain that embrace and feelings of home throughout the year? Today’s phrase is Home Fire.
December 15
“True friends are always together in spirit.” –L.M. Montgomery
Thank goodness that friendships are not contingent on how geographically close we are to people, but instead are based on the invisible connectors that make us feel close even when we aren’t. Whether we are down the street from each other or a long plane ride away our true friends will always be there and that is the difference between friends and acquaintances. Treasure your friends as they treasure you and everyone will be richer for it. Today’s word is Treasure.
December 16
“Sing out your songs and ring out your stories and rhymes.” -Lisa Kelly
This is the time to make memories, to sing the songs that you sang as a child and to share the stories that you were told when you were growing up with new generations. Spend time with family and friends, sharing stories and songs while creating new stories and memories to be shared in years to come. The gift of spending time together is just as precious as any gifts that may be exchanged next week. Today’s word is Legacy.
December 17
“Families are like fudge – mostly sweet with a few nuts.” –Les Dawson
Much like fudge, sometimes too much of a good thing isn’t good for us. Even though it is the holidays and we may be expected to spend time with people that push our buttons, we can still make self-care a priority. If you know you can only handle certain people for short periods of time it is okay to limit the time that you are around them. If you are feeling overwhelmed, know that there is nothing wrong with keeping visits short or turning down events that will have you spending prolonged periods with those whose energy drains you. Enjoy the fudge, and the nuts but don’t feel as if you have to overindulge. Today’s word is Moderation.
December 18
“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men.” –Herman Melville
We are not islands unto ourselves. We are all threads in the grand tapestry and although each thread can be beautiful and vibrant in its own right, we can’t see how amazing it is until we see it lend itself to the design and picture as a whole. Take time to step back and see what unique beauty your thread is bringing to the picture and to the lives of those around you. Today’s word is Woven.
December 19
“We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.” –Dorothy Day
Many of us will find ourselves away from loved ones and although the internet and technology can help to fill in some of the gaps, there is nothing like human contact. Having our own community is an important aspect of our personal care and support system, at the holidays and throughout the year. Reach out and connect with old and new friends. You may be the light for someone who is feeling alone or isolated, and in return the connections that you have will deepen. Today’s word is Kinship.
December 20
There are friends, there is family, and then there are friends that become family.
As much as we love our families, sometimes there are certain expectations that they have of us and it can be hard to simply be ourselves. Friends, on the other hand, love us like our families do and accept us for all our flaws and idiosyncrasies; sometimes they love us because of those quirks. Family is more than those that we share a name with, family encompasses those that love us, just as we love them. Today’s word is Tribe.
