Understanding Your Daily Focus
Sometimes, no matter how much we try to get ahead of issues or plan ahead, life can become more than we can handle on our own and we need to turn to friends, family, or professionals to help us to see our way through.
Asking for help is not something that comes easy for many, as there’s a belief that we should be able to handle things on our own no matter what. But as the old saying goes: no man is an island, and sometimes we just need to let others in so that they can help us, just as we help them.
This week’s daily focus takes inspiration from the places and people that we can turn to, to help us deal, manage, cope, re-charge from, and overcome the problems that we face.
February 29
“Be smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it.” –Ziad K. Abdelnour
Part of dealing with a problem or obstacle is recognizing that you may not be able to manage it on your own and then being confident enough to ask others for their aid. Asking for help or admitting that you can’t fix something by sheer will alone are not signs of weakness, even if that is what we tell ourselves with our negative self-talk. No one can be an expert in everything. This is why we feel a pull towards making connections, so that we can lean on and turn to each other so that we can all achieve our goals. Today’s word is Courage.

“Nature tops the list of potent tranquilizers and stress reducers.” –Patch Adams
Aside from giving us the building blocks for many of our modern medicines, nature on its own is a great healer and soother. Whether we are simply taking a walk near water, through the woods, or are getting our hands dirty by spending time planting and tending to gardens, there is something almost magical in how being in nature can help us to gain perspective and find peace, even during the most difficult of times. When things get too overwhelming, consider taking a step back and getting back to nature. Today’s word is Gaia.

“Friends are those rare people who ask how we are, and then wait to hear the answer.” –Ed Cunningham
Having the right friends in your life can certainly make a huge difference in how we are able to manage change, stress, and problems. A good friend will listen to you and give it to you straight, even if it isn’t what we want to hear. When things get difficult you quickly learn who you can count on. Quality over quantity should be what we keep in mind so that we know who we can trust and depend on. Today’s word is Confidant.
March 3
“Family… a group experience of love and support.” –Marianne Williamson
They may drive us crazy and sometimes the connections can be difficult, but usually when the chips are down our family will be there for us. When I talk about family, I don’t limit the definition to the people that we share names or blood with. Family are those people that we can be ourselves with, in all our wonder and sadness, and know that they won’t judge us for either extreme. Who do you consider members of your family? Today’s word is Tribe.
March 4
“Sometimes I like to be alone. I enjoy the freedom and solitude. In those moments, I remember who I am and what I want in life.”
Solitude can be both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on our state of mind. But after we have turned to friends, loved ones, and professionals, sometimes we just need time on our own to think through everything. Step back, hermit yourself if you need to, so that you can ponder the pros and cons of the options that you are facing. This is also a good time to make sure that we are balanced, and grounded, as stressful periods can easily cause us to be off kilter. So, enjoy those moments of peace and solitude and do a good old-fashioned grounding session before you take the next steps forward. Today’s word is Solitude.
March 5
“When you need professional advice, get it from professionals, not from your friends.” –Ray Simard
Getting advice and insight from our friends and family is usually our first step when facing a trying or difficult situation, but there are some problems and issues that we may face that we will need to get professional assistance to get through. Whether this is for mundane issues like our taxes or finances, opening up to our doctors, or even deciding that talking to a counselor to help us work through emotional turmoil, we are choosing to make our needs a priority. Adding professionals to our already existing support system ensures that no matter what we are facing, we will have all the help that we could possibly need. Today’s word is Experts.
March 6
“The positive energy and love we give to others, heals our own wounds.” –Angie Karan
Sometimes when we are feeling lost and down, our personal energy also plummets, so what can we do? Being around people can help, but we may not want to talk. A good balance is to simply be out among people. Go to a mall, a playground, or a coffee shop and just sit and feel the positive energy that others are exuding to re-charge our own batteries. We don’t always have to interact with people in order to benefit from being around them. Today’s word is Ambient.
