Understanding Your Daily Focus
In the process of finally unpacking all my books after a recent move, I came across a book on the thirteenth century Persian poet, Rumi, and was immediately reminded how powerful and apropos his words still are. I originally came upon his quotes when they were included in an amazing cookbook I was reading, and I became completely enamored of his work. I enjoyed the cookbook as much for the quotes scattered throughout as I did for the recipes that it contained!
In this week’s Daily Focus, I am sharing some of my favorite quotes from Rumi with you, who seemed to love life and sugar as much as I do.
May 30
“Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames.”
Life should be filled with passion and drive, but if we don’t have the right people around us, cheering us on, it is easy to lose that drive and settle for a life that is merely serviceable. Just as it is important for us to infuse our lives with purpose, passion, and excitement, we need to make sure that the people we include in it will fan our flames in the right ways. Today’s word is Burn.

“There is a candle in your heart, ready to be kindled. There is a void in your soul, ready to be filled. You feel it, don’t you?”
There is a beautiful German word: Sehnsucht which roughly translates into “longing”, “desire”, “yearning”, or “craving”. There have been times where we have all longed for something that we have never known or seen; this is Sehnsucht. That feeling can help us to pursue our goals and dreams, to fill in the spaces of longing with experiences and people. Allow it to guide us towards discovering new paths and interests and fill those voids to overflowing. Today’s word is Longing.

“Your heart is the size of an ocean. Go find yourself in its hidden depths.”
We learn what makes others tick and we will even sometimes change ourselves so that we can be dearer in the hearts of others. We often worry more about other peoples’ hearts than we do our own. At some point though, we need to be willing to delve into who we are, what it is our hearts need and want to feel complete and happy. Start that journey today and find yourself. Today’s word is Fathomless.

“You were born with wings, why prefer to crawl through life?”
Many people go through life barely looking up to gaze at the sky, always looking down and making it through their days feeling as if they don’t deserve more. Life can be difficult at times and we may have days that weigh us down, but even an airplane can fly. What makes your heart soar and makes you want to spread your wings? Find it, nurture it, and allow yourself to soar! Today’s word is Flight.

“From cane reeds, sugar. From a worm’s cocoon, silk. Be patient if you can, and from sour grapes will come something sweet.”
Patience is not an easy thing for many of us, me included. But the best things in life truly do come when we have enough patience to wait, paired with the knowledge that sometimes we need to do our part in order to get the end result we desire. Today’s word is Expectations.

“Words are a pretext. It is the inner bond that draws one person to another, not words.”
When we are with the right people we don’t need to say much, if anything at all. Being comfortable in the silence with those around us is a fantastic sign that we have found our tribe, if you will. Today’s word is Stillness.
June 5
“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”
When we are young, we seem to believe that in order to be happy, the world and people around us needs to change. It is only as we get older that we learn that it is only with self-growth and work that we can truly find happiness and a sense of fulfillment. The great thing is that when we change, we do affect the energy around us. So, in a sense, we are still changing the world, but in a more direct and personal way. Today’s word is Wisdom.
