What is a Pendulum?
Pendulums are the greatest on-the-go divination tool that you can use. They fit easily in a pocket or purse, they are affordable, you don’t need a lot of set up or extra space to use them, and they are easy to learn. Some divination tools can be cumbersome to carry around and can also be difficult to learn, but a pendulum is an easily accessible tool for anyone, at any age!
Pendulums come in many shapes, sizes, and materials, so you have plenty of choices. You can select from various gemstones, wood, or even metal for your material, with stones being best suited for different focuses. A Sephoroton has a stone in the center but features a metal point on the end, which gives you the best of both stone and metal and tends to be quite precise. If you like the idea of switching out your stones easily, then a cage pendulum would be perfect for you. If you plan on using your pendulum to direct healing energy, then a hexagon shape is best. For beginners though, a simple tear drop is always a fantastic choice.

Best Stones for Pendulums
So, what stones are best?
Clear Quartz – Amplifies energy
Rose Quartz – For individuals who tend to be very sensitive to energy or if you are asking questions about love
Amethyst – For those who doubt their own intuition
Black Obsidian – If you don’t like vague answers
Aquamarine – For easily connecting with Spirit
Lapis Lazuli – Affiliated with the Third Eye and enhances intuition
Moldavite –Enhances psychic ability
Labradorite – Enhances psychic ability and connection with Spirit
In a pinch, you can use a ring suspended from a chain or string and get rather accurate results. As long as what you are using has enough weight that slight breezes can’t make it move, you are good to go.
How to Make Your Own Pendulum
If you really want to go all out, it is fairly easy to make your own pendulum with just a few materials.
- A crystal or gemstone
- Jewelry wire
- A lightweight chain or cording
- Jewelry wire cutter and small nose pliers
Watch the video below for how to make your own pendulum:
Take a look at your selected crystal and see if there is a natural point. If there is, determine if you want that to be your top or bottom, (I prefer mine to point downwards.) Once you have determined which direction you want it to point, wrap the crystal with the jewelry wire until it feels secure. Once you’re finished wrapping it leave a loop at the top for your chain or cord. The cord doesn’t need to be very long; usually anywhere between 10 to 12 inches is perfect.
An important aspect of creating your own pendulum is focusing your intent while you are creating your tool. You don’t want to be watching TV or having a conversation while you are making your pendulum. You really want to focus on what you are doing and what you want your pendulum to be able to do.
Preparing Your Pendulum
Like any other tool that you use you need to cleanse and prepare your new pendulum, whether you have purchased one or made it yourself. Depending on the material you have chosen you can use any number of methods to cleanse your pendulum. Perhaps the easiest and safest for all materials will be leaving it near a piece of selenite in the moonlight for a night.
The next step is not mandatory, but I like to further prepare and cement my intent by using a Divination oleum (oil) on my tools. You only need a small amount rubbed into the pendulum and the chain as well. Here is a simple recipe:
- ¼ cup of either grapeseed oil or fractionated coconut oil
- ½ teaspoon of dried wormwood
- 1 tablespoon of mugwort
- ½ teaspoon powdered frankincense
- 6 drops of clary sage essential oil
Mix all ingredients in a glass jar and allow it to either steep in a cool, dark place for two weeks or place it in a crock pot with water on low until the oil has changed color.
Strain and add a few drops of vodka (as a preservative) and then store in amber colored bottles.
In a pinch you can just use clary sage essential oil, but I have found that using a good divination oleum really makes a difference.

How to Use a Pendulum
Before you use your pendulum for the first time, you need to get to know it a bit, what direction means yes, no, uncertain, and won’t answer. The best way to do this is to simply ask your pendulum. Holding it comfortably in your hand with your elbow resting on a stable object like a table, ask your pendulum: “Which direction is yes?” and note if it goes left to right, right to left, clockwise in a circle, or counter clockwise in a circle. Do this for each possible answer it may give you and definitely ask it a second time just to make sure that you have it right. Then, ask it some questions that you already know the answer to just to confirm what you have learned.
Sometimes the motions will be very large and exaggerated while other pendulums seem to use very minimal movement. Each one will be different, which is why it is important to do this step with each pendulum that you have.
One problem that can come up is the effect of micromovements on the pendulum. These are minute movements that the hand and fingers do that we aren’t even aware of that can influence the direction the pendulum takes. To circumvent this, you can use a pendulum stand and take that possibility out of the picture. Of course, this isn’t easy to do if you want to be able to use your pendulum when you are out and about, but it is an excellent aid when you are doing sessions in your home.
Now you can use your pendulum to answer simple yes and no questions. But what if you have more in-depth questions? Can you still use a pendulum? Yes, you can, you just use it in conjunction with a divination or pendulum board.
What is a Divination Board?
A divination or pendulum board has set parameters for the pendulum to follow. The divination or pendulum board can be as simple or as complex as you desire it to be. Some simply indicate the direction and its corresponding answer, while others include letters and numbers, much like a Ouija Board, so that more complex questions can be asked.
You can find a plethora of templates on the internet that you can print off or get ideas from. Or go ahead and create your own with the directions that you know are your pendulum’s default settings.

Why Should You Make Your Own Tools?
When you make your own tools, your energy becomes part of the finished product. They are automatically attuned to you, and you don’t have to worry how many other people may have touched them, leaving their residual energy behind.
Is that to say that a purchased pendulum and board won’t work? Of course not! I have several pendulums that I purchased over the years that work beautifully for me, and I have a couple that I made myself that I no longer resonate with so I don’t use them as often, or I have passed them on to students. As always, it’s best to go with your instincts in these matters.
