Learning to Act Through Dreams

Here’s a neat article I found on the New York Times site. Apparently, such notable actors as Meg Ryan, Harvey Keitel and Kate Walsh from Grey’s Anatomy use a form of method acting called “dream work” to prepare for their roles.

It says:

“Working with an acting coach and in workshops with other actors, using an increasingly popular technique influenced by Jungian psychology in which actors study and play the characters in their dreams…Actors in particular appear to be drawn to the work of Jung, who once wrote, “The dream is a theater in which the dreamer is himself the scene, the player, the prompter, the author, the producer, the public and the critic.”

    Nunu & Miss. Krystal,
I couldn’t agree with you two more. It’s so important to believe the things people tell you. If they tell you they don’t want a commitment, you really do need to believe them. We can only accept or choose to reject what people offer us but it’s so important to realize it’s not a reflection of your worthiness if someone can’t offer you what you want. It’s simply where that person is at. Believing what they tell you is the key to empowering yourself, and it sometimes means making difficult choices. Perhaps you need to Pass on Mr.I-Don’t-Know and wait for Mr.-I-Adore-You. Happy Readings Everyone!

    HI Marie-T,
Yes, many are afraid of what they really want…I agree,…..but I’m sure that you will achieve your goals. It showed up in your picture…in your aura….it surrounds you. Not only are you a talented creative soul, but very grounded as well…..that is a winning combination.

Marie T-that is funny. Sometimes I have thought some actors are prolly excited about their location. I hope you get a wonderful role, soon. You deserve it!
    Visualize it. Cheers, Miss Krystal

I love dreams and often remember and try to analyze and understand them. Sometimes, they’re just downright intuitive and warning or informing me of something. Sometimes they’re about that piece of cake I wanted but didn’t allow myself to have:)
But anyway….what appears to be so cool about this “dream work” is it allows people to really delve into their vulnerability which inevitably is what makes for a rich character. We all have a hard time sometimes being vulnerable but in that vulnerability is our truth and beauty too. So exploring this in dreams is a safe space to really face fears and desires. I mean some of us are just as scared of what we want as we are of what we don’t want.
If I’m playing a role where the character is vacationing on a tropical island is that still called dream “work” hahaha.
