Psychic Workout: Overcoming Anxiety

Brandy in Sioux Falls, South Dakota asks:

How do I get enough willpower to change things in my life that I know need to change…?

Psychic Marin ext. 5113 responds:

Time passes in the blink of an eye. Ask any elder in their later years, and they will immediately tell you to “Make the most of your life!” This answer to your question is not intended to cause further discomfort, rather to direct you to make the needed changes to live a more fulfilled life!

The emotional responses you feel, and the anxiety that hinders you, are a normal part of any transition. Just as you are about to make any big change in your life, the moments before the final change are often the hardest.

I suggest the following meditation to remove the final obstacles that are holding you back by fighting fear with fear: Embracing the shortness of one’s life. Sound a little depressing? It will actually awaken you to your inevitable death, readjust your priorities, and leave you feeling inspired and ready to live life to its fullest.

What are the things you want to do with your life, but have never gotten around to doing? Stuck in a dead-end job that you are tolerating? Or are you in a poisonous relationship that has sucked the life out of you? Meditate on the fact that the end of life could come at any point, not only in old age. Your initial reaction to the thought of life coming to an end will shed some deep insight on how fulfilled you are with the life you are currently living!

1) Sit in a location where you will be undisturbed. Using meditative breathing, develop a gentle sense of peace and begin to fully ground yourself.

2) Begin by stating your age, and how many years you expect to live, or have previously imagined yourself living. (This can be done mentally, not necessarily spoken out loud.)

3) Now begin to fill those years with activities, desires, and milestones. Are you competing for a prestigious job? Are you in an abusive relationship, and months have passed while you await the “prefect” moment to finally leave? Have you imagined having grandkids, or even great-grandkids? Do you want to live to see 100?

4) Imagine how you would feel if you were told that your life would end in three years. What would you do differently in your life? Thinking about how precious life is, what changes would you immediately make? Would you show more affection? Ask for forgiveness or mend a relationship? Learn how to overcome your fear of swimming?

5) Spend about five to ten minutes formulating a list of priorities and things that you want to change in your life. You may even choose to write them down.

Again, do not dwell on the negative aspect or anxiety around the subject of death, but rather view this meditation with the positive realization that when we are confronted with time limitations, we regain control of our life and how we are choosing to live it.

What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?

Thank you all for your wonderful comments!

Maryanne – I agree! For some reason, the act of writing goals down transforms them by putting them into motion and working towards fulfilling them. I am fortunate to have so many dreams/goals, that I must write them all down just to keep track. I have an ongoing “bucket list.” Just a few weeks ago I was able to check one more goal of the list… Surfing! Now I am on to my next; learning to speak French.

    Hi, Marin,

Thanks for an excellent article. I do feel that recognizing and acknowledging that our time here is finite helps to define what is most important to us and to nudge us off dead center toward those items which are most important to us.

Your mention of writing down what is important is powerful as well. A few years ago I was going to be blessed with a spring and summer “off”-no work, no study-free time. It took less than an hour to write a huge long list of things I wanted to do, see, learn, etc. and begin to prioritize it. We can each create that list any time and define what’s important to us. Having a care about getting stuck on the repetitive small things every day or week can also be helpful in opening up room for change.

    Thanks again,

    Sincerely,

    Maryanne

    Hi Marin,
these are all excellent tips. Love them. I also pray a lot for what is the lack thereof in my spirit or just in my life…-Miss Krystal
