The Planets in Retrograde
We all know Mercury in retrograde and what it means for us collectively, but Mercury is not the only planet that goes into retrograde. So, what is retrograde, exactly? When ancient astronomers looked at the stars and planets, they noticed that certain planets occasionally appeared to be moving backwards. In reality, the planet doesn’t change direction, but it’s angle to the sun and the earth changes during a retrograde, creating the illusion of backwards motion during that part of the orbit.
Astrology and Our Lives
The cosmos is woven into many aspects of our society. For instance, the days of the week are named after the stars. Some of the more obvious ones include Sunday for the sun and Monday for the moon. Each planet, or celestial body when we consider the sun and moon, rules over different aspects of daily life. The cosmos contains a pantheon of deities that have appeared across cultural borders, all focused on the mythos of the stars. So, what does that mean for the coming retrogrades? This month, two planets are entering retrograde only a day apart: Venus and Jupiter.
Venus Retrograde
Venus enters retrograde on May 13. Venus is often thought of as the planet, and ancient Goddess of love. Because of this, it’s easy to think of Venus as strictly feminine, but if we strip away all of the cultural connotations, what we’re left with are very basic aspects of the human condition: desire, beauty, sex, music, art, and comfort.
Go Inward with Venus
Venus in retrograde likes daydreaming, whimsy, and imagination. While Venus usually directs that energy outward into physicality, retrograde turns it inward. We all have desires: surface level desires, deep desires, secret, selfish, unrealistic— it’s good for our minds to wander, to try out different scenarios, to explore what we know of the world and prepare for it. It’s an important part of any of us; playfulness and imagination. We want to hope for a better future, we want to reach toward our dreams. We want to be romantic and whimsical. Venus entering retrograde urges us to do this.
This retrograde happens under the sign of Gemini. Gemini is a mutable sign, flexible and easygoing, drawn to intellect, conversations, and daydreams. A lot of people are spending time inside right now and limiting contact with others. While both Venus and Gemini inherently like connection, physicality, and drama, this retrograde will mellow those aspects out and allow us to focus on ourselves. This is a great time to start journaling, writing, or painting. Look to great creators who have faced strife and turned it into art. When something is taken from us, it leaves space for something new to grow.
Jupiter Retrograde
Jupiter is the God of Gods in Roman mythology, Zeus to the ancient Greeks, and the largest planet in our solar system. Jupiter rules Thursday and is seen as the embodiment of authority. When we think of Jupiter and its rule, we think of law, but also reason, knowledge, and science. It is order, progress, and growth. Jupiter spends about four months a year in retrograde, where these principles manifest in atypical and unusual ways. This year, Jupiter’s retrograde begins on May 14, with the planet returning direct on September 12, and this shift will happen under the sign of Capricorn.
While Jupiter in retrograde is fairly common, it is worth noting that the last time Jupiter was in retrograde under the sign of Capricorn was between May 9, 2008 and September 12, 2008. The global financial crisis was picking up speed during this time, coming to a head on September 15, 2008. Capricorn is often associated with hard work and the constant grind, so this retrograde may be a time where things slow down a little, and you may not feel as secure as you’re used to feeling, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.
How to Work with Jupiter Retrograde
So, what can you do to make it work for you? Stay prepared mentally, physically, and financially. Be careful with spending, make sure you’re doing all you can to keep you and your loved ones healthy, and take time to check in with yourself every day. Use this slower period to reflect on your work, your life, and your values, and realign whatever has fallen out of place over time.
Embrace this Slower Time
Take your complicated feelings and allow them room within your mind, explore scenarios, write love letters to your past self, learn to sew, or do something else creative. We have the time right now to think things through, and the other side of this pandemic might see new resources, new career opportunities, and new perspectives on what’s truly important. The manifestation will come later, once the dust settles, but for now, continue to indulge desire, and keep daydreaming.

So well written! This is centering and informative. Thank you so much! I plan to write a love letter or more! to my past self. I am in my late sixties and have just come upon an old wooden box filled with letters from old boyfriends and many from my mother. They’ve brought me much joy.
This is very interesting, and I have a much better understanding of what Retrograde means. Thanks Juliet for the part about Embracing the slower time! Something I should know, but really helps to read this advice as permission to do so. Very well written!
