Understanding Your Daily Focus
Recently, I achieved a goal that I had been working towards for almost three years. There are still moments that I am overcome with the sheer implausibility of it all, and go back and forth with thoughts like “Did I really do it?” and “What do I do now that something that I have been working towards for so long is now done?” It is both a great feeling and also a bit anti-climactic, in its own way.
Some of our long-term dreams and goals can take a long time to achieve, and we seem to lose some of the energy that we need to see them though. Other times, when we finally reach the end of the journey, we wonder what we should focus on next.
This week’s daily focus looks at dreams and goals. Following them, dealing with doubt while on our journey, and what we can do when we have achieved what we longed for.
February 1

Do you remember what it was like in high school and you were asked to figure out what it was that you wanted to do with your life? I remember being told that if I followed my passions and interests, I wouldn’t have much of a successful life, so I changed my plans and went along with what family and teachers recommended. Guess what? I was miserable! Even as adults we sometimes put what makes us happy on the back burner and simply exist by doing what people expect of us. It isn’t too late to determine what your purpose is or where your joy can be found. Do that soul searching today, find your happiness, and the path that will lead you off the back burner, and make it and you a priority. Today’s word is Direction.

What makes you, you? What fills you will passion and energy, even when you are exhausted? Being unique or having interests that aren’t common isn’t a bad thing. Many people enjoy being different or having friends whose perspectives are different from their own. If following your bliss means that you will do so in an nontraditional way, do it. You may find that you inspire other people to embrace their own uniqueness and everyone can lead a life that is fueled with both passion and authenticity. Today’s word is Extraordinary.

I couldn’t talk about following our dreams without quoting dear, old Walt! Even things that seem impossible today can become probable or possible tomorrow, as long as we still believe in ourselves and our dreams. The highest mountains and obstacles can be traversed, if we believe in what we are doing and keep putting one foot in front of the other. So, go ahead and wish on that star tonight, and tomorrow do what it will take to reach it! Today’s word is Faith.

Everyday life can get monotonous and draining. It is so easy to lose our sense of excitement and vigor when we simply move from one day to the next with no hopes of something different or with nothing to look forward to. This is why having both short term goals and dreams along with long term ones is so important. The knowledge that there is something new on the horizon can go a long way in turning the grey of our everyday lives into a color that invigorates us. Today’s word is Compelling.
February 5

Wouldn’t life be amazing if Harry Potter style magic existed? Sadly, it doesn’t, but even those magicians had to go the school to learn and master their skills. We need to be willing to put our all into achieving our dreams and goals and that means hard work and a lot of determination. If you feel as if you are never getting closer to your dreams, then it might be time to re-assess what you are doing to reach them. Chances are it won’t take much of a shift in your approach to make it happen, but you must be willing to work hard no matter what. Determination is its own kind of magic. Today’s word is Magic.

Just as you have to be patient with the person that you are becoming and give yourself the time and support you need, you have to do the same when it comes to working towards your goals and dreams. These things won’t and can’t happen overnight, as much as we would like them to. It is okay to feel discouraged, tired, or even disappointed. The big thing is to stay the course and know that with patience, not only will you become the person you desire to be, but you will also reach the dreams and goals that will help you achieve them. Today’s word is Compassion.
February 7

Everything comes to an end, and planning ahead for that and what we will transition into after our goals are achieved is just as important as all the planning and work we put into making them reality. We usually don’t like to think that far ahead, because things can happen, and our timelines may need to shift, but we should have some idea of where our life’s path will take us. It’s not that we need to live our present always worrying about the end results, but it is good to know what our next adventure will be, and to realize that every ending marks a new beginning. Today’s word is Ongoing.
