Understanding Your Daily Focus
Love is in the air! February may be cold weather-wise for many of us, but the warm feelings of love and Valentine’s Day is enough to warm our hearts if not our hands. It doesn’t matter if the love comes from our families, friends, or partners. Having that in our lives can make even the worst times and hardest challenges easier.
Love is one of those things that can feel elusive to many people, and when we can’t find it, we usually start to blame ourselves. I think this is one reason why loving ourselves can be such a challenge, even when loving others comes so easy.
So, in honor of Cupid, St. Valentine, and emotion in general this week’s daily focus meditates on the emotion that makes us strong and weak, unpredictable yet grounded…Love.
February 8
“You don’t love someone for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.”
People don’t become important in our lives because of what they bring to the table, but because of who comes to the table. The people that we love and who love us won’t care if we drive a 15 year old, ready to fall apart car or a sparkling, new, luxury vehicle, nor does it matter if we are wearing sweats or are dressed for a night on the town. All that matters is we know how the other person ticks, what’s important, and how to be supportive when support is needed. When you love someone, you don’t need more than that. Today’s word is Acceptance.
February 9
“Spend your time on those who love you unconditionally. Don’t waste it on those who only love you when the conditions are right for them.”
Although love is something that we have in abundance and can’t really run out of, there is nothing wrong with being selective about who you give your love and time too. We may have people in our lives who seem to show us love and consideration, but only when they need something or when we are useful to them. Just because you care about someone, it doesn’t give them carte blanche to drain your energy and leave you with nothing. Keep those who bring the same energy to your life that you bring to theirs and know that it is okay to be protective of your love, heart, and time. Today’s word is Equitable.
February 10
“I don’t want someone who sees the good about me. I want someone who sees the bad and still loves me.”
No one is all good. People are shades of grey, a mixture of good, bad, and the work in progress, and the right person will not only see all of that but will accept it all wholeheartedly. People aren’t meant to be placed on pedestals as if they are perfect, unchanging works of art. Love accepts us no matter how far along we are in our growth, and not only loves us in spite of our flaws, but sometimes because of them. Today’s word is Complexity.
February 11
“The most memorable people in life will be the friends who loved you when you weren’t very lovable.” –Aidan Chambers
Why is it that when we are having a bad day, we pull away and hide from those we are closest to? When we have the right people in our lives, we shouldn’t have to feel that we need to hide when we are not perfect. The people that love us will be there even when we are tired, needy, angry, disheartened, and stressed. With our support system in place we can be free to show our less than stellar attributes and know that we aren’t being judged, just accepted and loved. Today’s word is Free.
February 12
“Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” –Saint Mother Teresa
How many Hallmark movies start with a shy, uncertain smile between two people? A smile can break the ice, ease tension, soothe pain and stress, and even convey understanding and love when words seem inadequate or too cumbersome. A smile opens us up to possibilities and connection. If we were to look in the mirror, we would probably find ourselves with a look that is less than warm more often than not. With this being a week focused on love, let’s experiment with greeting people with a smile and see what might blossom. Today’s word is Expressions.
February 13
“Love Fearlessly.” – 1 John 4:18
Yes, love and the act of opening ourselves up to love, can and does leave us vulnerable and that can be scary. But closing ourselves off and living out the rest of our lives alone is equally frightening. Trying to overcome that hesitancy and fear isn’t easy, but it is worth it. Move through life unflinchingly and with the knowledge that ultimately, love is worth it. Today’s word is Undaunted.
February 14
“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” –Lao Tzu
Love is a two-way street, in more ways than one. When we know that someone loves and believes in us, and when we love someone in return, we feel as if there is nothing we can’t achieve. We put our fears on the back burner and push forward into the unknown. We give each other the strength to move forward in our lives and take risks, knowing that we will always be here for each other. Love is more than wanting what we have, it is also wanting those you care about to grow and giving them the foundation from which they can soar. Today’s word is Pillar.
