Understanding Your Daily Focus
Friendship is that gift that we continually get to unwrap and take joy in. Good friends are with us through the good and the bad. When we are flying high, they soar alongside us, and when we don’t have the energy or will to pick ourselves up, they offer their hands, shoulders, and hearts.
This week’s daily focus looks at those people who make us laugh, keep our secrets, share their own, and who, to quote from the show “Wicked” change us “for good”.
January 18
“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” –C.S. Lewis
Each of us at some point thought that there couldn’t possibly be anyone who thought, believed, or were interested in the same things as us, so when we do find someone who shares our interests it can feel almost magical! Friends not only share our interests, but also open us up to new ideas and activities that can make our lives more fulfilling and our friendships even more miraculous. Today’s word is Cohort.
January 19
“A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.” –Bernard Meltzer
When people love you and you love them in return you should be able to share all those parts of yourself that you hide away out of fear. Even when your future dreams and goals are huge, a good friend will not only dream alongside you, but will help you to lay the foundations and start building the stairway to help you to get there. Today’s word is Support.
January 20
“A friend knows the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails.” –Donna Roberts
Life isn’t always easy. We get disheartened, tired, and lost, and sometimes we just need a light to guide us back to where we can find refuge, a warm embrace, and a reminder of why we are working so hard. Our friends know just what to do to lift us up and to remind us of our worth and our journey. This is why it is so important to let our walls down so that friends can hear our song, learn it, and remind us how it goes. Today’s word is Pathfinder.
January 21
“Growing apart doesn’t change the fact that for a long time we grew side by side; our roots will always be tangled. I’m glad for that.” –Ally Condie
People change, relationships change, or miles may spring up between us, either physical or intangible, causing our connections to pull apart as we continue our journeys on our own. But even when we are no longer in contact our lines will always show the time that we were linked, for good or for bad. Those weavings leave us with a picture and a memory and both of us forever changed. Today’s word is Woven.
January 22
“You need to hang out with people who fit your future, not your history.”
Our past and present can become too comfortable and familiar, and as such we cling to them, and to the people that shared that time with us, sometimes to our detriment. Or perhaps you have grown and changed and know that staying with people who haven’t changed could cause you to revert to old habits. Sometimes we just need to accept that as we grow, we may need to focus on those people and friends that share our new view and can appreciate distant horizons, instead of those who constantly relive yesterday’s glory. Today’s word is Expansion.
January 23
“Do not be too busy with your life that you forget to ask your friend how she is doing, okay?”
Everyone lives at such a fast pace, with so much filling our daily To-Do lists and calendars that it is easy for time to slip by without reaching out to those who mean so much to us. You would think that in a world where we can communicate through multiple mediums that we would be more connected instead of less, but that isn’t always the case. And if it has been a while since we last reached out, embarrassment may set in and prevent us from reaching out. That feeling of embarrassment will quickly fade away once you hear their voice or read their message though. Today, reach out to someone that you haven’t had a chat with in a while, chances are they have been thinking about you too. Today’s word is Communicate.
January 24
“If you make friends with yourself you will never be alone.” –Maxwell Maltz
Being a friend to and with yourself is perhaps the biggest gift that you can give to you. Friends know us better than we sometimes know ourselves, so in befriending ourselves, perhaps we will gain some new insight into what makes us tick, not to mention, instead of breaking ourselves down with critical self-talk we will be better able to support ourselves in times of doubt and false starts. Friends love each other, and loving yourself is a wonderful thing indeed. Today’s word is Self-regard.
