Summer Rituals To Adopt

Often, people can feel shut out of the more practical end of spirituality — from the art of “doing,” so to speak. Rituals can look complicated from the outside. They often involve tools and supplies, whether it’s audio for meditation, herbs for tonics, candles for prayer, or crystals! It can sometimes seem like a deep pool, and the thought of jumping in can be particularly intimidating if you’re not yet sure how to swim.

This week, let’s look at some very simple rituals that you can adopt into your daily life to improve mindfulness, reconnect with your body, and regulate your emotional responses.

Sometimes the best way to clear your mind is to move your body. Something as simple as a walk outside can do wonders for your spirit and your emotional state. When people have something grounding them to the earth, like the feeling of their feet on the pavement, the wind on their face, or the sun on their skin, it becomes easier to let go of stress and instead live in the moment.

It’s enough for you to simply ground yourself and consciously think about washing away certain feelings, ties, or unwanted energies. Swimming in nature can also be a powerful experience, so if you hit the lake or beach this summer, take a few moments to enjoy a water ritual.

Making even small changes in the way you speak to yourself can have a wide ripple effect. When you first start practicing intentional affirmations like “I am beautiful, I am worthy, I am important,” it can feel a little strange. If you come up against this natural resistance, go ahead and push through it. It’s important that you don’t give up at this step. Instead, look at the places where you’re stuck and change your inner dialogue. Ask “why not?” instead of closing the book entirely. Remind yourself that you can do difficult things, be flexible, and adapt.

Chanting is a great way to calm yourself down and connect with your body and mind. The act of chanting stimulates the vagus nerve, the largest nerve in the body, extending from the top of the spine downward. This nerve is the longest in the autonomic nervous system, and it is the nerve that allows your brain, lungs, heart, and other vital organs to communicate. Chanting or humming stimulates this nerve, helping you regulate your breathing, heart rate, and circulation, among many other things.
