Understanding Your Daily Focus
I am constantly reading and recently came across an amazing poem by Steve Maraboli called “Dare to Be”. Its recommendations on how to find little ways to bring compassion, understanding, and humanity into our lives struck such a chord in me that I knew I had found my inspiration for this week’s daily focus.
There are times when all we need is a little understanding and compassion to face life and all its little foibles and challenges, and yet, those things seem to be in short supply in our fast paced, self-centered world. Sometimes this empathy is for the plight of others, other times it is compassion for us, and understanding that we are not perfect. No matter who the benevolence and kindness are ultimately for, we should always strive to be an oasis of kindness for all, including ourselves. Note that all of this week’s quotes come from Steve Maraboli’s “Dare to Be”.
March 14
“When there is darkness, dare to be the first to shine a light. When another is lost, dare to help them find the way.”
It isn’t fun to be fumbling along in the dark, literally or figuratively. Just as we look to our loved ones to be the beacon of hope and a light in our darkest hours, we need to be there for others too. The best part is, sometimes we don’t even realize that we have been that light to a person and in some cases, we may never learn that we helped to guide someone through the shadows and into a light filled life. Today’s word is Beacon.
March 15
“When someone is hurting, dare to help them heal.”
When a person is hurting it isn’t uncommon for them to strike out, even at those who are trying their best to help them, just as a wounded animal growls, and will lash out at a well-meaning person. This behavior can make us fear to reach out to lend our aid and support, because no one wants to get hurt for trying to do a good deed. When someone is in such a painful place, we need to put our fears aside and do what we can to help them, even if all that means is letting them know that we are willing to listen and support them. Never hold back that love when someone is hurting. Sometimes feeling that no one will reach out can make it far worse. Today’s word is Alleviate.
March 16
“When a friend falls, dare to be the first to extend a hand.”
I would like to think that most of us can remember the commercial of the older woman calling out: “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” And I’m sure that we have all been in that position at several points in our lives. Maybe we hold back on offering a hand because we feel that the person in question wasn’t there for us when we needed them, or maybe we are afraid of them getting defensive. But whatever the reason, we should try to be there with a hand up. Today’s word is Elevate.
March 17
“When you cross paths with another, dare to make them smile.”
Sometimes showing compassion doesn’t have to include doing something above and beyond the norm. In fact, it can be as simple as smiling at someone who looks like they are having a rough day. We have moved so far away from the sense of community that our parents and grandparents knew that many walk around with our thoughts turned so far inward that we miss the cues from others that they are struggling. For today, gaze outward and give the amazing gift of a genuine smile to those whose paths you cross. Chances are you will get a few back in return. Today’s word is Warmth.
March 18
“When you feel great, dare to help someone else feel great too.”
I have been blessed with friends that try to lift those in their lives up to the same platform that they are on. They firmly believe that success and abundance is best when shared, and they would rather spend their time lifting others up than hoard all the positives for themselves. Create a network of people who are feeling and doing great things in their lives, and you have created a force for good in this world. Today’s word is Together.
March 19
“When the day has ended, dare to feel as if you’ve done your best.”
Take time each day to pause and reflect on what you have accomplished and know that we can’t always finish everything in one day. It is equally as important to recognize that we all have our limitations, we can’t be equally talented or skilled in all aspects of life, and our best is more than good enough. Today’s word is Acknowledge.
March 20
“At all times, dare to be!”
Dare to be silly, loving, happy, and joyful. Equally, dare to let the tears fall, the heaviness to be acknowledged, and the loneliness to remind us that we are human, no matter what we might believe. Allow yourself to feel and experience the full range of human emotion and realize that in daring to be ourselves, unashamedly and unabashedly, we are causing other people’s energies to change their resonance to meet ours. When we all feel safe enough to be ourselves, what an amazing world we will create for the present and the future. Today’s word is Dare!
