Understanding Your Daily Focus
Over the past several months I’ve found myself spending more time in meditation and introspection than I have in many years. This has helped me see myself in new ways and to find new ways to honor Spirit in my daily practice.
Taking time to meditate or to simply be in the moment is an amazing tool for self-growth as it helps us to reacquaint ourselves with what makes us tick and what is no longer working for us. We may not always have time to squeeze a long meditation session into our days but gifting ourselves even ten minutes of quiet is a gift well given and greatly deserved. This week’s Daily Focus meditates on the benefits that a few minutes of peace can bring to us all.

“Start with what you have. Just start.”
You may think that you need to read books or watch videos on how to meditate so that you can be sure that you are doing it right. But you don’t need to do that at all. All you need is five minutes, a quiet setting, and the desire to meditate and you are good to go. Don’t allow something as integral as meditating to become something complex and overwhelming. Even if you only have two minutes to spare today, that is all that you need. Today’s word is Initiate.

“Notice what happens when you follow your intuitive feelings. The result is usually increased energy and power, and a sense of things flowing.” –Shakti Gawain
We have all experienced a time when we followed our instincts and allowed our intuition to guide us on our path. This is usually accompanied by a burst of energy and excitement to help carry us along. This is energy that we can tap into when we are familiar with our personal energy flow, something that reflection and meditation can manifest. Today’s word is Boundless.

“No-one can function properly without occasional peace and quiet.” –Christopher Paolini
Even the most outgoing extrovert needs some time to chill and be with their own thoughts. Meditation isn’t only when we sit cross legged and breathe, it can come while we are enjoying a soothing song, or a peaceful walk at night when everything has become hushed. Recognizing our need for tranquility is an important part of our self-care toolbox. Today’s word is Quietude.

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” –Thich Nhat Hahn
Staying in the moment is the goal, but that doesn’t mean our minds will be blank slates. Thoughts will drift through, as will feelings, and when they do it is important to acknowledge them and let them move on. The best way to do this is to remember to breathe and if you feel yourself being caught up in a thought or feeling to simply refocus on your breathing pattern. Today’s word is Touchstone.

“Listen to the inner light; it will guide you. Listen to inner peace; it will feed you.” –Sri Chinmoy
Your inner light is what will both drive and guide you during your journey and transformative cycles. But your inner tranquility and resolute knowledge of where you are going will feed you and give you the energy that you will need to achieve your goals. Together these aspects of self will make your journey easier. Today’s word is Nurture.

“I have lived with several Zen masters – all of them cats.” –Eckhart Tolle
As a housemate of three spoiled kitties I have to say that this is the truth in our home. No matter what is going on around them, within moments they seem to settle into calm as they watch the situation at hand and decide their next action. I think it is easy to envy our four legged friends this ability, but this is something that is well within our grasp if we just allow ourselves to take a step back, ground ourselves, and look at the situation before us through clear eyes. Today’s word is Catlike.

“So, when you’re thinking about creativity, it comes from a source – an inner source. When you’re meditating, you’re bringing your consciousness to that centered source of creativity and intelligence.” –Tosin Abasi
Many of us enjoyed art classes when we were younger. We created from our hearts and souls, completely oblivious to what might have been right or wrong techniques or methods. We were focused on sharing what we saw, imagined, and believed to be real and right. This careless abandon is something that we lose over time and as such we also seem to lose the flexibility to see all creative possibilities. Maybe it’s time to break out the finger paints! Today’s word is Imaginative.
Don’t Fear Meditation
Meditation can come in many forms: breathing and grounding techniques, through art and other creative outlets. Even taking a walk can bring on a meditative state of mind where free flowing thoughts can lead to much needed clarity and answers. Find what works for you and feel free to change things up when needed.
