How to Set Intentions and Activate Your Crystals

Crystals and gemstones are one of the easiest tools that you can use to better your life. Many people carry a pouch with assorted stones to help them through their day or difficult situations. In fact, the use of crystals for protection, empowerment, and healing has skyrocketed in recent years. But even crystals need to be cleansed and prepared for optimal effects.

Setting Intentions and Imbuing Crystals

In order for crystals to perform the job you want them for, you have to set your intentions first. Although stones do have a bit of a default setting due to their individual properties, if you are planning to work with a crystal for a specific outcome, it is important to align that stone’s intention with your own. Keeping it simple, concise, and focused is always best.

Touch

One way to set the intention is to hold the stone in your hands for several minutes, while you focus on what you desire the crystal to bring into or take out of your life. Start off by taking several deep, grounding breaths and end the process the same way once it feels like the stone has absorbed your energy and intent.

Crystal Grid

Another option that you can use is setting up a grid using other stones. This method takes some research as you will want to use stones that correspond with your desires. When I create a grid, I tend to use a covered glass cake dish, as I have pets that otherwise might try to play with the stones. This is also a great way to make sure that they don’t get dusty.

Color

I usually use different colored scarves for this method. Select a color that best represents what your desired intention is. For example, if I wanted a crystal to help me attract a positive, romantic love, I would probably go with a pink or soft red tone. Place the crystal on the cloth and if possible, light a candle of a corresponding color. I recommend chime candles for this as they don’t take forever to burn. Focus your thoughts on your desired outcome and then let the candle burn down.

Divine Assistance

Asking the Divine to imbue the item with energy is another excellent option for imbuing your crystals with your intentions. This is the method that I most often use, especially if I am charging a piece for a friend or a client. Attaining a meditative state is a plus but not mandatory. Using an appropriate sigil for the Divine Intelligence that I want to work with, I place the crystal on a piece of paper with the sigil drawn on it and ask for the Divine to imbue the item with Its energy and essence. You can even incorporate lighting a candle into this method quite easily. For added oomph, try using appropriate essential oils that align with your desired goal or something particularly favored by the Divine Intelligence that you are working with.

Cleansing Your Crystals

With only a few exceptions, crystals can become tired and unable to do their jobs due to a buildup of negative or toxic energies. The more you use your crystals or are exposed to toxicity, the more frequent the need to cleanse your tools.

Regularly cleansing your crystals helps renew and reset the powers of both old and new pieces. Fortunately, there are many different ways to properly and effectively cleanse stones and crystals.

Cleansing Methods

Water

This is probably one of the easiest methods of cleaning your hard stones. If you prefer fresh water and can get some, I always recommend rainwater whenever possible. If not, simply hold your stones under running water for about a minute per stone. You can also use saltwater for added oomph to the cleansing process. Water should not be used for softer stones like Selenite, Kyanite, Opal, and Apatite.

Brown Rice

This is especially good for protective stones like Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, and Nuummite. Simply place your stones in a bowl filled with dry rice and leave them overnight. Make sure you dispose of the rice afterwards as it will have absorbed the negativity.

Sage

Just as sage can be used to cleanse your home, it is equally effective on your stones and crystals. Simply waft the smoke over your stones or hold them over the smoke for about 30 seconds for best results. This is usually easier outside.

Sound

Sound has the power to move in a way that very few things can. To cleanse your crystals, you can use anything from a tuning fork or singing bowls, to chanting or ringing bells. Usually you can get several stones done at a time, which makes this method very quick.

Other Stones

You can place stones like Selenite, Quartz, or Amethyst in and around your stones as a way to continuously cleanse them. I have a large tray in my living room filled with assorted stones surrounded by alternating selenite towers and wands to ensure that my stones are always ready to go.

Moonlight

Another popular and easy method is simply to leave your crystals out in the moonlight for an evening. The Full Moon is the most potent moonlight to cleanse your crystals in.

Fire and Smoke

Passing the stones through a flame is another method of cleansing. If you have a firepit, you can simply place the stones around the periphery and allow the energy to do its job. Adding cleansing herbs like sage, lavender, rosemary, or sweetgrass will add to the purifying properties of the smoke as well.
