What Goes Around Comes Around
Karma. A simple word that can make us second guess our
choices and the reasoning behind them. We have all heard the sayings: “Karma
always comes back around” and “Karma never loses an address,” but what exactly
is Karma and why do we need to be aware of it? Is it always a bad thing? Can we
change it? And what are some signs that you are in a lifetime where past Karma
is coming due?
What is Karma?
Literally speaking the definition of the word ‘Karma’ means action, work, or deed. In Sanskrit the word “karma” means action. “It comes from the root “kri,” meaning to act. Karma refers to actions or deeds, in the past, present, and future. It encompasses physical, mental, and psychological acts.
In yoga they break it down into three types:
1. Sanchitta
Everything that we have accomplished, good and bad, in
the past. These actions cannot be changed but can only wait to come to
fruition. This is the accumulation of our karma, comprising every action that we
have ever made in our past and present lives.
2. Prarabdha
Prarabdha is that portion of past karma that is
responsible for our present lives. Who we are today is all down to our actions
in our pasts. It cannot be avoided or changed, only experienced.
3. Agami
Agami Karma is the karma we create for ourselves in
the present. It is our actions and the choices we make right now, as we live
this present lifetime.
The Myth of Paying in Kind
A common misunderstanding is that karma is direct and linear. Many like to claim that their karma is bad when something bad happens to them, or that they have earned good karma if they do something nice for someone else. The conventional understanding seems to be that if someone cuts people off in traffic, then they’re going to get cut off in traffic a lot in return, and that’s their karma coming back at them. This is not how it works in the Buddhist understanding of karma however, though, they may still get cut off in traffic a lot for other reasons.
When Karma Touches the Heart
Sometimes our karma can get linked with that of another person. When this happens, we say that we have a Karmic relationship with that individual. One of the most powerful connections we can make is Karmic. Karmic relationships hit fast and hard, often at first glance. They leave us off balance and doubting ourselves. The reason we enter karmic relationships is twofold: A) to break the cycles of bad behavior from past lifetimes and B) to learn how to heal any carried over damage so that we can move forward unencumbered.
Karmic Debt
How do you know if you have any karmic debts? The
simple answer is, are there any repeating patterns in your life? Are you
constantly having issues in specific areas? Then chances are you are carrying
some karmic debt.
You can also determine whether or not you are carrying
karmic debt based on your Life Path number. Life Path numbers 13, 14, 16, and
19 are all markers for there being karmic debt in your current lifetime. To figure
this out, you simply take the numbers of your birthday and add them together.
So, if your birthday is January 3, 1971, you would add up 1+3+1+9+7+1=22 which
is not a Karmic Debt number.
Karmic Debt Numbers
If you did the math, and you did turn up one of the four karmic debt numbers, the reasons you may be carrying karmic debt into this lifetime may be for the following reasons.
13: You are meant to pay back a debt for selfish and lazy behavior in a past life. You didn’t want to work or maintain your responsibilities.
14: Indicates issues with you giving power or control to others, sometimes even to your own harm. You may also have held the power over others’ lives in one or more of your past lives. This number speaks to self-rule, autonomy, and self-determination.
16: You might have been vain and egotistical in a past life as well as hurtful in your relationships. This is the hardest one to rectify as you have to end this cycle of birth and rebirth, and “prove” yourself worthy.
19: You were a manipulative person and very selfish. You controlled people for your own personal gain.
Erasing Karmic Debt
Being aware of what we need to learn and that we need to change are the important first steps in erasing our karmic debt as we move forward with our lives. The following steps can help you on your way to cleansing your karma.
- Be Grateful: Both good and bad experiences give us opportunities to grow and change.
- Separate from Toxic People/Situations: You can’t make the best choices for yourself when you are surrounded by those who keep making sabotaging choices.
- Be Aware of Your Motives: Where are they coming from? A place of understanding and love or from jealousy and resistance?
- Take Action: When you recognize that something isn’t working then change it. Do good even when no one expects it of you.
- Forgive: This may be the toughest step of all, but it is of the utmost importance. Remember, when you forgive, you free yourself as much as you free them.
To Break the Wheel or Not?
It is our choice to stay locked in a never-ending karmic wheel or not. It comes down to whether or not we have the courage, to be honest with ourselves, make the tough decisions, and change what needs to be changed.
