Understanding Your Daily Focus
The older I get the more I try to look at life in a holistic sense. Being chronically ill and disabled has forced me to look at health as the intersection of genetics, lifestyle, trauma history, and spirituality. Without the balance of mental and physical health, I don’t operate well. I can’t trade one for the other, which so often feels like a requirement to survive in this world.
I’ve learned that my body is an ecosystem, and it is constantly at play with the other wonderous and terrifying self-contained ecosystems of everyone I know. Nothing happens in a vacuum. In order to tackle the feelings that leave us feeling stuck, we have to look at our minds, our bodies, and our spirits to make sure that they are aligned.
In this week’s Daily Focus, let’s take the time to examine how these different elements of self can come together to help foster and facilitate growth and healing.

“Each time you are honest and conduct yourself with honesty, a success force will drive you toward greater success. Each time you lie, even with a little white lie, there are strong forces pushing you toward failure.” –Joseph Sugarman
One of the most foundational elements for being happy and healthy is honesty, with yourself and with others. There’s a reason that in addiction treatment, the first step is always admitting there a problem. The philosophy transfers. Be honest about your needs, and what you can realistically tackle. Set goals for yourself that you know are attainable and lean on others when the time comes.

“Life doesn’t make any sense without interdependence. We need each other, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all.” –Erik Erikson
Communication, honesty, and problem-solving are essential parts of holistic healing. Sometimes, that means getting an outside opinion. If you’re surrounded by people who are always in your corner, and who stand by every choice you make without question, maybe it’s time to branch out. It could mean talking to a professional, or even to a stranger, but make sure you’re seeing things from more than just one side.
Monday, April 12
“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” –Virginia Woolf
Make sure you eat! Eat well, eat food that fuels you, and makes you feel energized. Eat food that fuels your soul as well, be it chocolate or butter. Make sure that you’re taking time to appreciate all five of your senses and rewarding yourself for getting through another day with a little treat.

“Consciousness is only possible through change; change is only possible through movement.” –Aldous Huxley
Don’t stand still. Make sure that you’re moving, even if it isn’t steady. Movement is physically important for our bodies, but it’s also vital for our brains, our imaginations, and our ambitions. I want you to try and think of movement as something beyond the physical. As someone who is disabled, it’s taken me a long time to think of movement as something bigger than just physical. But there is movement in art, in music, in light— we just have to look for it.

“My mother told me to follow my dreams, so I took a nap.” –Unknown
Just like you need to make sure you’re getting enough food and movement, make sure you’re getting a good night’s sleep. Listen to your body when it tells you what it needs.
Thursday, April 15
“To understand the immeasurable, the mind must be extraordinarily quiet, still.” –Jiddu Krishnamurti
As important as it is to push through, communicate, and foster growth, it is also important to take time to sit in peace. Quiet moments go a long way. Make sure you take some time today to sit in silence. If you have a pet, a child, or a significant other, try spending a few minutes making quiet eye contact and see how it affects your mood.
Friday, April 16
“Journaling is like whispering to one’s self and listening at the same time.” –Bram Stoker
Journaling is another way that you can connect and reflect. It’s the best way to keep information fresh and to be able to reflect on how far we’ve come. If you feel overwhelmed with emotions—or the opposite, unable to connect to them, try writing things down and revisiting them later.
