Understanding Your Daily Focus
In this week’s Daily Focus I want to talk about the elements because I feel that they connect deeply to many aspects of my personal work. There are the astrological connections, the way that different planets and different signs embody these elements, and the way that we, in turn, contain and express those elements as personality traits, feelings, and life-journeys.
I want to look at the individual elements, but also at what we can glean from yet another cyclical narrative connecting humanity, nature, and Spirit.

“Don’t dismiss the elements. Water soothes and heals.
Air refreshes and revives. Earth grounds and holds. Fire is a burning reminder
of our own will and creative power. Swallow their spells. There’s a certain
sweet comfort in knowing that you belong to them all.” –Victoria
Erickson
There is something mystical and magical about the
combination of these elements, both in the practice of spirituality and in the
physical world too. Fire transforms, Earth grounds us, Air inspires, and Water
heals. We must keep in mind that we contain these multitudes as we move through
our days.

“Keep a little fire burning; however small, however
hidden.” –Cormac McCarthy, The Road
Fire is one of the most tangible and real things on the planet. It has the power to bring life and also to destroy it. However, often when we talk about fire we are talking about the human spirit. There is a flame within all of us that we must keep kindled. Do something today to keep your own personal fire burning bright.
Monday, April 5
“Fire can destroy or purify, strengthen or weaken, all depending on the nature of the material being burned.” –Lance Conrad, “The Price of Creation”
Think today about what material you are made of, and what
you’re offering up. Are you in a position to be destroyed by the trials of Fire,
or tempered by it? It is not just the flame that we must fear, but the reaction
and connection it has with the material it consumes.

“The element of Air, which is above us, around us, and
inside of us, is connected to intellect, the spirit, communication, and the
collective subconscious.” –Unknown
The element of Air represents and fosters imagination, communication, and knowledge. It is what is above us, around us, once unknowable but tangible, like the wind. Today, take a moment to think about things critically and ask yourself if there are things you could be focusing on in new and creative ways to get out of current slumps.
Wednesday, April 7
“Air is the element most needed by Fire. This is why
you need open spaces, the wind, and to fly. Because you have Fire in you. This
is why you look into the sky, why you make wishes, why you tread lightly. You,
too, are the Air, because inside you there is Fire. Why do you think we
breathe? Because we are kindling our fires.” –C. JoyBell C.
Thinking holistically about the elements and our connection
to them, we can see how they work together. This is one of the reasons that Air
and Fire signs get along so well. Every element is fostered by or connected to
another element in some way. Today, reach out to people who see the world
differently than you do and try to keep your eyes and mind open.

“Water is also one of the four elements, the most
beautiful of God’s creations. It is both wet and cold, heavy, and with a
tendency to descend, and flows with great readiness… Water, then, is the most
beautiful element and rich in usefulness, and purifies from all filth, and not
only from the filth of the body but from that of the soul.” –John
of Damascus
Water is essential to life. It heals, cleans, it allows crops to grow. It fosters growth in so many ways. Water signs tend to be known as open and emotional, but they are also steady, strong, and persistent. Water is a force to be reckoned with, just like you are. If you’ve been keeping your feelings tamped down, today is a good day to reconnect with them.

“Touching the Earth – digging, planting, harvesting –
connects us literally and spiritually to those who have dug, planted and
harvested before us.” –Peg Streep
Earth, the planet we live on, which gives us food, and
trees, which give us Air—the place where rain falls, and where Fire starts,
Earth is more than just an element, it is home. The element of Earth is all
about roots, stability, growth, and abundance. It is the sign of fertility and
wealth, connected to Saturn who rules time, death, and money. This element
represents our deepest self, our desires, our fears, and above that—our needs.
