Understanding Your Daily Focus
In this week’s Daily Focus, I want to talk about how we can use this week’s Full Moon for release and reorganization. The Snow Moon is named for the unusually snowy conditions in the USA during the month of February. This moon has many names, but The Old Farmer’s Almanac calls it the Snow Moon, which is my favorite. It’s called the Ash Moon in paganism, and several Native American tribes called it the Eagle Moon or the Bear Moon. The Algonquin’s called it the Groundhog Moon, perhaps because of the groundhog’s natural tendency to emerge during the month of February, a tradition we still uphold today.
Whatever name you use for it, the Snow Moon comes during some of the coldest weeks of the year, and usually finds the terrestrial landscape bleak, frost bleached, and dead. However, there is the smallest hint of new life in the air, as we creep away from midwinter and toward the light of spring. In a way, the Snow Moon is the last winter moon of the year, and this year she comes on in full force under the sign of Virgo, urging us to put aside Pisces’ emotional sway and focus on what needs to be done.
Saturday, February 27
“’I love the snow’ is the cry of December, ask
again in February and you will hear a different song.”
The words “Snow Moon” may invoke images of the most playful aspects of winter, but the reality is that for those of us who live in the colder parts of the Northern Hemisphere, we’re sick to death of snow and ice by now. The Snow Moon encapsulates both the beauty of snow and the desolate, ice-crusted energy of late winter. Today is a good day to think about the duality of all things, the things we love and the things we can’t stand.
Sunday, February 28
“If you can get your mind and your heart to pull
equal weight, you’ll be in good shape.”
The sun is in emotional, kind, understanding
Pisces. The moon in Virgo urges caution, creativity, and rigid organization. If
you can harness both of these energies today, calling on both the understanding
energy of Pisces and the encouraging energy of Virgo, they will serve you well.
Monday, March 1
“There is something about late winter that bleeds
scarcity.”
This Full Moon is in Virgo, which lends an air of
organization and curation. There is something about Virgo that seems to
inherently understand scarcity, and how to best stretch a dollar, a meal, and
patience. Today is a good day to recalibrate necessity and look at what is in
your life that is no longer serving you.
Tuesday, March 2
“The Snow Moon brings cold light, somehow more
welcome than sun in the middle of winter.”
Today is the day to embrace things just as they
are. Midwinter can be bleak, but it’s part of a larger cycle. So, it goes. If
you’re struggling to hold onto things today, or not finding anything to look
forward to, try instead to be present in this moment. There may be things about
right now that you will miss down the line.
Wednesday, March 3
“I’m like a croquis. I come to life in the snow.”
It’s easy to think of winter, especially the
frost-crusted landscape that precedes spring, as desolate. But there are a lot
of good things that come from hard earth. Sometimes we just have to work a
little harder to break through. This is a good day to focus on resolve, and
pushing through even when things seem difficult or, dare I say, hopeless.
Thursday, March 4
“Messes are part of what makes life beautiful, try
to remember that.”
As the energy from the Virgo Full Moon fades and
shifts with her transition into another Earth sign, Capricorn, it’s important
to remember not to sweat the small things. This is a good day to take a look at
what is worth your energy, and what is simply not. This is still the time of
hibernation, of hoarding resources during times of scarcity. Be careful not to
give too much of yourself away.
Friday, March 5
“Blessed is the moon for what she knows, and more
so for what she hides.”
Whenever I talk about the moon, I think it’s important to look at the natural duality. When we look up at the moon, regardless of what phase she is in, we are looking only at her bright side. She hides much from us all, and I think that’s one of the things that allows us to personify her in such a meaningful way. We all know what it’s like to have secrets, and honestly—sometimes secrets are a good thing.
