1. You Can’t Control the Past

As much as you’d like to, you have zero control over other people’s reactions, thoughts, and emotions. While you may think you’d like to have some concrete influence (and, surely, we all really do try sometimes), it would be quite an overwhelming responsibility if you could actually wield that kind of power. In fact, it would probably weigh you down more than it would help your relationships, from your romantic bonds to your family. Knowing that all you can do is treat people with respect and kindness lifts that burden.
4. You Can’t Control the Unexpected
Throughout your life, things are just going to happen. Great, wonderful things and terrible, debilitating things. Yes, it would be nice if you could get a head’s up when these events and situations occur, for better or for worse, but, sadly, that’s just not how life works. Once you accept that, you can be free to stop fearing the future or setting too-high expectations for the outcomes of your actions. Instead, you can resolve to just live your life to the fullest.
