His Stress Can Lead to a Funk

Whether your guy chooses to recognize his fate or not, if he is suffering from job stress there are several things you can do to ease his mind.

Help Him Find Balance

Earlier this year, the American Psychological Association (APA) released results from a survey asking men and women about their stress levels. What they discovered is that men manage their tension differently from women. In particular, they ignore it, assuming that it has no effect on them. This is a dangerous choice, considering that surveys also suggest tension can creep up, causing a host of chronic illness, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Maybe your guy is suffering from job stress or “man”stration, here are a few pointers on how to get him out of that stressful funk.

Listen

Guys aren’t big talkers. However, when the stress poo hits the fan, he may need to vent his frustration. This is usually a one-way spit session, which may involve tears and profanity. While it is in a woman’s nature to be a nurturer in her relationships, men don’t always want to be coddled. Rather, they want to be heard, understood, respected and supported. Speak Softly and Carry Good Intention

Men are not the type to cry on a woman’s shoulder. However, women can help a man gain a greater understanding of his feelings. She can guide him through a few steps meant to start him along the path to feeling better.

Step 1: Men don’t always assume their hurt is justified. Men do not think that they are supposed to be emotional. After all, men are taught to avoid their feelings. It is important to express your understanding and validation for the way he feels. This will allow him to sort through his mixed emotions and find closure.

Step 2: A man who is in a bad funk may be used to his mood becoming even worse, once he peeves off his girlfriend or wife after refusing to cheer up. Instead of trying to change how he feels, and becoming angry if your tactics don’t work, just accept his mood. Once your guy feels validated, tell him that you are there for him, and will support him in whatever way that he needs. Then back off, and let him come to you.

Cut Him Off From All Sources of Negativity

A funny television or movie may make a guy feel better. However, television, the Internet, and most news sources are generally more depressive than upbeat. Get him up and out of his chair and do something that will get his mind off his troubles.

“Sometimes we don’t even realize that we are our harshest critic and are so accustomed to failing that we create situations in our lives that fulfill that negative trap.” – Psychic Jesse ext. 9027

Get Some Exercise and Sun

Vitamin D deficiency is known to have a devastating effect on men. It is amazing what a 20-minute walk in the sunlight can do for a guy’s outlook.

Go On a Day Trip… Not a Shopping Spree

Studies show that one of the best ways for men to feel instantly better is to purchase something frivolous and irresponsible. However, this kind of medicated spending will not last long and can result in approximately 30 percent fewer “coconuts” in his (and your) bank account. Men cherish memories more than stuff, so a better option is to spend the money on a fun experience.

Two Funks Make a Right

Mark Twain once said, “The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up.” There is truth to this, as studies suggest happiness usually proceeds being the cause of another person’s cheer.

Take a Load Off

Sometimes a funk is emotional, and other times it is because he has too many things going on. If there is any way that you can help take some of the pressure off, that may be all he needs to see a silver lining.

Hook Him Up

You would think that a one-night stand (hook up) would promote depression. However, studies say differently. Guys who are depressed, lonely, or down, can be instantly perked up just by some charity (pity) sex. Interestingly, it is actually the happy-go-lucky guys who feel the most dejected after the fact. Researchers speculate the magic is in the long-lasting memory of intimate contact, which makes any depressed guy just feel better about himself.

Be a Role Model

Some researchers believe that we could make the entire world a happier place just by increasing the number of happy people in it. With this theory in mind, it makes sense that by maintaining a positive outlook, you can cheer up any guy. Just don’t act too happy, or you’ll risk looking like a disciple of Barney the purple dinosaur.

Thanks for the insight. I am for the most part a pretty happy person but not always sure how to cheer someone else up. After a couple of attempts I usually just back off and give them space to come around on their own. These were great proactive tips to helping someone through a down time…Thanks again.

Thank you for the insight. Lately my husband has been very sressed out, but so have I. The result: we bicker constantly and even though I try to show him compassion about his stress, when HE has a lot of stress he has no empathy for me, but he has time to look down on me and treat me like a child.
Another thing he does quite a LOT is when I am just venting to him about something that is bothering me, he assumes for some odd reason that I am mad at him about it. Most often what I am talking about in no way, shape or form could possibly be is faultl as it is not even related to him, but he still personalizes it and turns it around so the stess is on him, so I end up apologizing for even telling him about it. Shouldn’t he be the ONE PERSON I can talk to about anyhing?
Finally, the other thing he does that I am learning is a “Man Thing” to do is when I am talking, he hears only the first part of what I say, and then his brain is already thinking about what he can do to “fix it”, so he never hears the rest of what I am saying, and many times I am telling him how the situation was already resolved. At least once a day I tell him “You Don’t LISTEN!” Then we are BOTH stressed and frustrated.
    Any help????
