Feeling Grounded for Earth Day
When we were kids, there was nothing worse than getting grounded. Now, as adults, we are seeking ways be more ‘grounded’ every day. If life has had you going at full speed until recently, Earth Day can be a great time to remind you to stop and smell the roses. Rose scented oils can work in a pinch.
Get Outside and Move
Contrary to the common use of “Spring forward”, this time of year is about slowly reawakening. As ice melts and flowers bloom, we welcome the return of the sun and longer days. Spending more time outside can be a great way to feel connected to the earth. Listening to nature’s soundtrack of wind in the trees and birds singing can certainly elevate your mood.
One way to get outside more often is to go for a walk, something that many are still, thankfully, able to do during the Coronavirus Pandemic. Going for walks around your neighborhood is an easy habit to form. Even better, consider visiting one of your local parks or community gardens if they’re still open.
Dig into the Earth
Gardening is one of the best ways to connect with nature. Many edible plants and herbs can easily be grown by beginners. Even without a yard, plants may be cultivated in the smallest of apartments with a few hours of direct sunlight. Herbs like rosemary and lavender provide flavors for culinary use but also enhance moods with their scent.
A More Natural Diet
What we put into our body is just as important as what we put on it. Most of what we eat should come from the earth. Whether you consume meat and dairy, or opt for a plant-based diet, spring is a great time to move away from overly processed food items. Even just cooking your own food rather than eating out can help you feel more connected to it.
Bond with Animals
Plants are not the only way to feel close to nature. If you are an animal lover, there are many ways to spend time with them. With many animal shelters low on volunteers, and just as many people currently living full time at home, fostering a pet could enhance your connection with the earth, and give you some company as well.
And not all members of the animal kingdom that need our help are soft and four legged- have you ever considered keeping bees? According to National Geographic, bees contribute more than 15 billion dollars annually to the U.S. economy by pollinating crops. Climate concerns are putting these little worker bees at risk and creating a space for them can be as easy as hanging a bird house.
Incorporate Crystals
Because most of us buy our crystals in shops or online, it can be easy to forget that these gems come to us from the earth. Did you know that crystals can be incorporated into a natural beauty routine? Aquamarine, rose quartz, jade, and fluorite are wonderful options for incorporation into our self-care. Today, a variety of facial rollers are available already made out of crystals. In addition to using these, you can give yourself a crystal facial, placing stones on different meridian points of your face to reduce tension. Clean stones can be soaked in water in the sun and used to wash your face. Even better for on the go beauty, crystals can be added to glass spray bottles, charged in the sun, and then used as a refreshing face mist throughout the day.
Sync Up with the Earth
Our biological rhythm is very much in sync with the earth’s revolutions. Research shows that plants, animals, and humans all have circadian rhythms. In 2017, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for explaining exactly how living organisms ‘sync’ with the earth. The researchers isolated a gene that encodes a protein that accumulates in the cell during the night, and degrades during the day, thus, creating a self-sustaining clockwork inside our cells. Waking up and going to bed a little bit earlier than usual may help this synchronization even more.
Energize Your Chakras
Chakras are the seven centers of energy that run throughout the body. The goal is keeping these centers open and balanced. Spring is a great time to focus on your Root chakra, the center that governs your connection to the earth. A simple meditation to balance the Root chakra is to imagine the color red illuminating the base of your spine. Imagine the red light glowing down your legs and feet, connecting you to the earth. Another way to balance the Root chakra is through yoga. Tree pose is a very helpful pose for this, as you plant your left foot firmly on the ground and raise your right foot.
Enjoy the Earth Today
As winter melts away, there are so many ways to reconnect with the earth. After being indoors or bundled up for so long, toss away your shoes (and yoga mat) and get as close as you can to the ground. Feeling sand, dirt, or grass beneath your feet is the best way to feel grounded. Research shows that walking barefoot in nature (grounding) has an almost instantaneous physiological affect. Mental and physical health is greatly improved as tension also melts away. We are a few months past Thanksgiving, but what a wonderful time to thank the earth!
