Rituals for the Spring Equinox

What Is the Spring Equinox?

The Spring Equinox, also known as the Vernal Equinox, marks the Northern Hemisphere’s transition from winter into spring. It also marks one of two days where there’s an equal amount of day and night, with the other being the Autumn Equinox.

The Spring Equinox usually occurs around March 19-March 21 of each year. In 2024, the Spring Equinox is on March 19, though the exact date can vary depending on where you are.

The move from winter to spring is a time of fresh growth. Buds begin to form on flowering plants, and some early blooms may have already opened. The days get longer, and many baby animals are born. Some regard the Vernal Equinox as a wonderful opportunity to make new commitments and embark upon new endeavors, the same way that many people make New Year’s resolutions at the turn of the year on the Gregorian calendar.

How To Make the Most of the Spring Equinox

While the Spring Equinox brings an exciting wave of new energy, it takes action and intent to fully harness all the potential associated with this event. An easy way to tap into the Spring Equinox is to use rituals, which can help you access the potent growth-oriented energy associated with the turn of the seasons.

If you aren’t sure what kind of ritual would be most useful or are wondering how to structure a ritual that supports your goals, a Life Path Psychic can offer spiritual insight and help you consider the bigger picture.

Spring Equinox Rituals

Here are a few basic Spring Equinox rituals that you can use to tap into the energy of this spiritually powerful day.

Ritual 1: Cleaning

The equinox is a time of new beginnings. It’s also a great time to move old energy out of your life and make way for the new! To begin, consider where your life has become stagnant. Do you drag your feet getting ready in the morning because you don’t enjoy the process of picking out an outfit? Have you been avoiding a creative hobby but can’t put a finger on why? Once you’ve identified what bothers you, you can start figuring out how to clean your space in a way that will move energy through it. This may be obvious, like cleaning a room or space that is so cluttered that it stresses you out. However, it could also be something less immediate, such as organizing the files on your computer or spiritually cleansing your space.

After you’ve decided what space you’ll be cleaning, pick a date and time near the Spring Equinox. Make sure that you set aside at least two hours for this process. When the day comes, open the ritual by clearing your energy in whatever way appeals to you, perhaps by taking a shower, meditating, or going for a walk.

Then set an intention for your ritual, something like “I will clean this area so that I can comfortably welcome my friends into my space” or “I am going to organize my resources in a way that helps me think clearly and creatively about my hobby.”

Make sure you set up your environment in a way that will facilitate your success. Play music that relates to your intention or energizes you to accomplish the task. Light a candle, fill up your water bottle, get yourself a fresh cup of tea, enjoy an easy-to-eat snack, and/or do anything else that will help you stay motivated through the ritual. Then get to cleaning!

Once you finish, take a moment in the newly cleaned space to reflect on your intentions. Visualize yourself engaging with this space in a fulfilling way. Take a few deep breaths and try to consciously let go of the old feelings you had in or about this space, making way for new experiences. Close this Spring Equinox ritual by celebrating your accomplishments.

Ritual 2: Writing

Use writing exercises to manifest a desired change in your life. This is an incremental ritual that takes place over time, making it a great Spring Equinox ritual for people who prefer a slow, steady approach to change.

First, identify either a specific change you’d like to see or an aspect of your life that you’re hoping to rejuvenate with fresh energy. Then, over the course of a week or two, write about this intent. This writing should take the form that feels most natural to you: personal narrative, poetry, bullet points, stream of consciousness, or anything else that feels right.

You don’t need to write for very long, but you do want to have an attainable goal. You can set a timer, or you can plan to write a certain number of sentences. Either way, just pick an increment that feels comfortable. As long as it’s something you can stick to, it can be brief.

When you sit down to write, pick a place that calls to you. This applies to your physical location as well as where you’re actually recording your entry — maybe it’s the Notes app in your phone, a journal, or even on post-it notes. The most important part is that your writing is kept somewhere it won’t get lost.

Continue this process for a number of days chosen by you, though aim for at least five. Ideally, you should do this for several days both before and after the Spring Equinox. However, you can also start on the equinox and continue the process afterward. Regardless, on your last day of journaling, find a quiet place to sit alone and read all your writing aloud. Once you finish, conclude the ritual by closing your eyes and focusing on the change you’re manifesting. Then congratulate yourself on your work!

Ritual 3: Stretching

Is there something you’ve been wanting to try but been held back from by doubt? Consider breathing some new confidence and life into those dreams with this practice. This ritual utilizes physical stretching of the body to work through feelings of limitation and inflexibility in other areas of your life. All you need for this ritual is a quiet space where you can lay down and move without limitation or discomfort.

Select a day and time near the Spring Equinox, making sure that you have an hour or two to work with. As you open the ritual, enter your chosen space, and take the most comfortable position for your body. Close your eyes and breathe deeply as you try to quiet your thoughts. Once you feel present and grounded, think about your goal.

Then, slowly stretch your whole body. If you want, you can turn on music that will help you focus. Start at your feet and gradually work your way up to your neck and head. Stretch as thoroughly as is comfortable for you, but try and hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds.

As you stretch, mentally break your goals down into the smallest steps possible. With each muscle you stretch, imagine yourself taking the next step down the path to your dream. If you run out of steps before you finish stretching, start at the beginning of the path again and continue the visualization process.

Once you’ve finished stretching, close the ritual by once again finding your way to the most comfortable position for your body. Close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply as you visualize yourself achieving your goal, and then thank yourself for your efforts.
