Do it Yourself: Tarot Readings

Make the Tarot Work for You!

When we think of Tarot cards, images of gypsies, spells, spirits and crystal balls come to mind. While Tarot readings have a great history, the cards themselves only have power if you place your belief in them. Some people use Tarot cards every day in order to get the messages for the day while others place great importance in Tarot cards as guides for their life path. Reading Tarot can become quite a hobby!

Have you always wanted to learn how to read the Tarot in order to discover what you past, present and future really mean? While Tarot readings are best performed by professionals, you can still learn how to use the Tarot to answer your everyday questions. Here’s how:

Getting Started

You’ll need your own Tarot deck. If you’re tempted to borrow someone else’s, don’t. This is because the Tarot deck holds the personal energy of the person who uses it and you don’t want to confuse or mix energies when you are trying to do a personal Tarot reading. When your first purchase your deck, wrap it in a cloth and place them in a box when not in use. You can store them close to your body for a week to absorb your energy. I suggest placing the box you store them in under your pillow.

Asking Questions and Discovering Yourself

Now it’s time for you to start reading your own Tarot cards! Make sure you are in a quiet space away from all distractions of any kind. Concentrate on the questions you want answers to and put all of your energy into your thoughts. Think about your questions and concerns as you shuffle your Tarot cards.

Shuffle the deck as many times as you like. If you are reading Tarot cards for someone else, ask them to ask their question while you are shuffling the cards and ask them to pick their cards from the shuffled deck.

Depending on how many messages you want or need for that specific day, (some days require more support) randomly choose a card or cards from the deck. Some people choose to use formations such as three cards representing the past, present and future. Many people choose a simple spread of cards which is four in a diamond shape format. When you have chosen your cards, put the rest of the deck to the side.

Reading Your Cards

Now that you have your cards in front of you, you can start reading their meanings and see how they affect your past, present and future thoughts and feelings. If any of your chosen card are upside down this means they are negative messages and if your cards are right-side up, they are positive messages. Reversed cards represent blocked energy—a weaker influence of the card’s meaning and also indicates forms of conflict.

“Your psychic can help uncover the blocks that keep you from achieving greatness, but only if you’re open to the messages they receive.” – Psychic Priscilla ext. 5637

Your Tarot card deck most likely came with a handbook with explanations of each card, symbol, etc. Read through each card of yours and see how it relates to your question of the day. You may find guidance through each card and get in touch with your inner spirit on a whole new level. You can do a reading every day to give you a clearer understanding of which path you should take and opportunities that you should be on the look out for.

Very nice Sherrie! To add onto Martin’s post (very helpful, I didn’t know about the cleansing of the cards), You can hold the deck in your left hand and form a fist with your right hand and knock on the cards once, to remove someone else’s energy after they have touched any of the cards or the deck, after you have done a reading for them. After that, consecrate the cards with your energy by briefly touching all of them. This was what the instructional book said to do with Doreen Virtue decks that was given to me by a friend. I had bought my own deck prior to these decks, and now I have more decks (oracle cards and one set of Angel Tarot) to read with. I have just started reading for fun for a couple of family members and a coworker, and they seem to always bring forth a message that is suitable at the time of the reading. I allow them to shuffle the Tarot deck, but not the Oracle decks. I ask them to think about their question while the shuffling is being done, whether by them or myself. I just read the meaning of the cards in the book and follow my intuition. You can look up and study the meaning of cards on the internet, or get a book at a bookstore, a small investment for a wealth of knowledge.

Brenda spread your cards on a window sill let the sun purify the cards, then place the cards after a day in a silk cloth and place them in a box , put the box under your pillow and sleep with them, your energies will go in to the cleansed cards and they will become yours, dont let any one else touch the cards with out your permission… and only if you are doing a reading for some one , some tarot readers don’t allow them to be touched by any one , tho I believe if you are doing a reading for a friend , you give permission and allow them to shuffle the cards while asking their question… then after they have finished shuffling not to touch them again, I also ask the person I’m reading for not to ask the question out loud as thoughts are stronger than words

It’s too bad the ones that write these columns don’t come back and check or answer any ones questions!
First of all if you have a question don’t expect anyone to answer here birth date or none! They won’t. You have to call for a reading!
Second, The person who got the Tarot cards Brenda. I have been doing Tarot readings since age 17. I am 56 now. It is not easy to learn. I get online and read any free articles on card meanings I can. just a guide. The meanings of the cards come from what your gut tells you. It is like a book with pictures and no writing. It takes a lot of practice. Practice on friends. Just for fun right now until you get the hang of it. There are lessons you can take. Look in your home town under new age stores. Sometimes you will find there a study group.
And N. Shani, The same for you. You need to find some help or course to learn. You can learn on your own but it isn’t easy. If you want to know your card association with your birthdate add up all the numbers in your birthdate and the break it down into a single number, I get 35 and break down is 8. Look at the number 8 I think is the chariot, in the Major Arcana.” Your aim is victory, and to be victorious you must have unwavering confidence in your cause. Never question, never doubt what you’re trying to achieve. Never lose your focus or your motivation.” Is one meaning of this card. Or you can look through the deck and pick out a card you feel a connection with.
My advice if you have a deck is to draw one card every day and focus on it, learn its meaning and what you feel from it!
I hope I helped! I wish like I said more of these column writers need to be on top of their page! And I applied here for a job reading and was turned down. LOL!
