Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the zoo without the animals reading your mind – after the eras of Paul the Psychic Octopus and Harry the Psychic Crocodile – there’s a new psychic animal on the loose. And this one may be the cutest one yet.
“Grandpa” is a psychic spider monkey from the Staten Island Zoo who has been predicting outcomes of matches in the U.S. Open. So far, he’s got a 4-0 record. Fanhouse reports:
Meet Grandpa, the 34-year-old psychic spider monkey, who had a perfect 4-0 record when picking random matches at the U.S. Open heading into Wednesday. I’d introduce him to Paul, but part of me feels that the octopus foresaw this genius of the Ateles genus coming from a mile away…
For his fourth victory, Grandpa picked 25th-seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland over 20th-seed Sam Querrey to advance to the quarterfinals. He was riding a high, until Wednesday afternoon.
Grandpa selected a major upset on the women’s side, predicting 31st-seed Kaia Kanepi to oust 7th-seed Vera Zvonareva in their quarterfinals match. Unfortunately for Grandpa, Zvonareva defeated Kanepi in straight sets. Bananas! Well, that was fun while it lasted. To be fair, if Grandpa picks the next four matches correctly we should at least give him some sort of old tip-of-the-cap.
As the first warm-blooded psychic animal, will Grandpa be the greatest yet? And… are there even more psychic critters around the corner?
