In this continuing series, we talk to our psychics about their day-to-day lives. In this installment of “A Day in the Life,” California Psychics interviews Psychic Tobias.
When you have a day off, what does that typically look like?
I start every day with a meditation to set my energy and intention for the day. First thing after emerging from [my] room, [I] feed my cat his fresh-prepared homemade raw diet. After that, my wife and I drink matcha together. We love the frothy texture and clear-headed lift we experience [from] the matcha we prepare with our traditional Japanese chawan and chasen set.
We make sure our cat, Gris-Gris, receives extra attention on off days. He deserves it after all his work throughout the week helping me with my readings on the line (if you read with me, chances are he is on my lap as we speak). We play games around the house. His favorite involves me running all around the house dragging a string…while he chases behind me full speed! We also take him for walks around the neighborhood on his harness. He loves to get his own Tarot readings, too!
In the evenings, one of our favorite things is to prepare a fresh meal of vegetarian Indian cuisine. We love dishes like aloo gobi, navratan korma, biangan bharta, and double jeera rice, all made from scratch.
Tell us something interesting that your clients would love to know about you.
After graduating with my bachelor’s degree in history and English, I had been accepted to a master’s program to study transpersonal psychology when I decided academia was no longer for me, and I decided to jump straight into the deep end and pursue my passion. I moved to New Orleans and began reading Tarot at a tiny folding table in Jackson Square.
For many years, I read Tarot full-time in the French Quarter. I read for a wide range of people from all over the world and all stations of life, answering every question under the sun. I often read until 4 o’clock in the morning. It was the best Tarot education I could ever have, reading every day in the busiest Tarot city in the Western Hemisphere. I spent some years in Jackson Square, followed by a few years reading in French Quarter shops. When the pandemic shut everything down, I was fortunate enough to connect with the wonderful opportunity [of] working here at California Psychics. Here, I have found a true family that I feel privileged to be a part of.
Do you have any go-to mantras?
As a practicing Hindu, mantras are a deep and fundamental part of my spiritual practice. Mantra is a Sanskrit word that originally refers to a prayer or phrase of spiritual power that a practitioner chants for many repetitions (traditionally 108 times) in order to activate the energy of the mantra in their life.
The most important mantra in my practice is Om Namah Shivaya. “Om” represents the fundamental vibration of the Universe and vibrates into the mantra and energizes it. “Namah” is a greeting, the root word of the more familiar word namaste, and [it] is used to greet and invoke what the mantra calls upon. “Shivaya” means “to Shiva,” the deva (god) in Hinduism who represents the highest and truest expression of self and actualization… Chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” or “Om and salutations to Shiva” activates the power in my high[er] self to grow and achieve its highest and truest attainment.
What advice would you give a first-time reader?
The first and most important thing for any reader is to always work toward a thorough understanding of your own self: mind, heart, life, and patterns. One of the biggest ethical principles of this work is to never project one’s own biases and past experiences onto the client. One must always be able to distinguish between such things and the intuitive information one divines for others.
If you use tools (and I think tools add a lot to both depth and consistency of readings), study them thoroughly. Read the best sources you can find, study the history and traditions of your medium, and learn ancient and modern approaches to interpretation. The more you expand your knowledge, the deeper you can connect with the medium and the broader your vocabulary becomes.
Finally, be prolific. Especially when starting out, read for everyone you can, read for as many…kinds of questions as you can, and read for yourself too (even though your own biases make this extra challenging). No question is too big or too small, and the more experience you gain, the more your wisdom and skill can grow.
When and how did you discover your psychic abilities?
[I’ve] had them [for] as long as I can remember. I have always seen, felt, and communicated with spirits; perceived energies around people, powerful objects, and places; and had the ability to see how things connect and interrelate in ways not apparent to my normal senses.
It took a little time into my…childhood to learn that not everyone had these experiences! As I pursued this passion further, I learned to train and develop these senses, and ultimately this became the focus of my entire adult career.
