Dear Cameron,

I enjoy being a dog walker, but I feel like I should be doing more with my life. The problem is, I’m not sure what it is I should be doing. I’ve been looking for new jobs, but I don’t have a lot of the skills or the degrees they’re asking for. I also don’t have the money to go back to school. I’m worried if I get a loan, then I’ll be in debt for a long time while trying to pay it off.

I was a dog groomer, but the boss reminded me of my step-mom, so I had to leave before my mental and emotional state got worse than it already is. Then, I worked at a doggy daycare/boarding facility and everything was going great until it became more about money and less about the safety of the dogs and staff. Now I’m a dog walker. As I search for a new job, I fear people won’t accept me because I just have experience working with animals. Should I keep searching for jobs related to animals, or should I try dipping my toe into something different?

Thank you very much for your question. I’ve consulted my cards about your situation. I can see that you are stuck, but I believe I can provide you with some insight.

The very first card in your reading in the Eight of Coins. This suggests to me that you have an independent spirit and probably enjoy being a dog walker because it allows you to be in business for yourself. I also see, with the Queen of Swords (reversed) in your reading, the influence that your step-mom has had on your confidence and why it triggered you when you worked as a groomer. I think that her criticism, in general, has affected you and she may be the voice that you hear in your head when you think about trying new things or moving along a different career path. Choose to listen to your inner voice.

You appear in my reading as the Queen of Cups, a woman who is loving and supportive and has a lot to give. I also believe, with the Ten of Coins, that the people you work for as a dog walker value your work and appreciate you. You are highly intuitive, which is why animals respond to you. You have a lot to give.

Part of the problem is that you are feeling overwhelmed right now (the Ten of Wands upside down) and you don’t know which direction to move in. I also think you learned from your family that being independent means not asking for help. But that isn’t the case, especially when I see that there are people who would like to support you. I see a woman in your reading, this feels like a very close friend, who I believe has some career advice and suggestions for you. Schedule a time to meet her for lunch or coffee and tell her that you want to move your career in a different direction. You clearly have an affinity for working with animals. While I think that is wonderful, I also sense that you may want to do something else that involves caring for others.
