Dear Sloane,
I’m still in love with my ex-boyfriend who likes to play relationship games. We haven’t been in a relationship for five years, yet he likes to put me on pause and come in and out of my life whenever he wants. Basically, he has me on a string like a puppet. I love him dearly but don’t know what to do to get him to stop the relationship games. I’m like his security blanket and I hate it. My heart is in knots because he won’t stop this. He calls me his wife and says we will always be together yet he continues with the relationship games.

This is such a difficult relationship for you to detach from. Your heart loves him so deeply, yet the relationship games he plays means that he is not thinking about your needs at all. The reason he won’t let you go is that the love you feel for him sustains him and keeps him going; every time you attempt to break the bond he glues it back together.
In order to stop the cycle, you have to look at this like an addiction—you may love it but your health and well-being are at risk. You must find a way to nourish yourself completely without him in your life, otherwise, the merry-go-round will continue. We can’t help who we love, but you can choose where you put your focus and concentration.
Commit to blocking him, to loving him from a distance, and knowing that there is a future for you when you are able to say no to the past. Let yourself grieve the loss of the relationship knowing that you are healing a wound that must be released in order to grow.
