Will I ever have the kind of financial security that will allow me to relax and quit worrying? I’m a single mom who is trying to support three boys and am terrified always that I won’t be able to provide for them and am on edge constantly. I crave a time in my life that I don’t have to stress about where the money is going to come from to keep us out of trouble.
Dear Sheila,
I don’t know that you will ever not worry about money, but the day will come when you can certainly be much more relaxed. You seem to have a knack for keeping things together and having enough to get by. Sometimes things are more difficult than other times, but you are quite strategic when it comes to your financial plane.
As far as “ever” having financial security, you will have the level of security you choose to create. You are an intelligent and capable woman, who sometimes lets pride get in your way. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If you ask, you will receive! While I don’t see money flowing freely to you, I do see that you will change your circumstances in order to create more free-flowing cash. By furthering your education a little bit, you can ensure your ability to provide for your boys.
Take advantage of the fact that you presently are a single mom. There are programs available to you that will assist you with an education program that won’t take too much time away from your family. Much of your studies can be done at home, either through correspondence or online. You may think you don’t have the time or energy to take on anything more, but you can and you will. It looks like a nine-month course will increase your income by at least $12,000. While it may not seem like a lot, a thousand bucks a month is still twelve thousand more dollars than you have coming to you now.
I strongly want to encourage you to start on this sooner rather than later. You won’t be single for more than three years. While marriage and another income is going to greatly relieve your anxiety, the greatest peace of mind comes through you knowing that you created more financial stability for yourself, in a manner that you can build from, should you ever want or choose to.
It’s hard not to worry about the lack of money, but if you channel that energy into creating security, you’ll surprise yourself with not only what you are capable of – but also how easily you accomplished your goal.
Good luck,
Red
