Tarot vs. Oracle Decks
Oracle decks and tarot decks are both oracles. An oracle is a tool to access the Divine and receive guidance from Spirit, your angels, and your Higher Self. Oracle decks differ from tarot in that tarot is very structured and even with slight variations, all true tarot decks have this structure.
Tarot has 78 cards which is made of 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana cards. The major arcana represents archetypal energies and important life events, while the minor arcana represents the more day-to-day aspects of life and are divided into suits: Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles. The court cards are representative of people. It requires deep, intensive study to learn Tarot and its specific meanings, but once you do, it is amazing how it opens accurate guidance for yourself and others you read for.
Oracle decks are more fluid and free-flowing, and they can be wildly different from each other. They can have any number of cards and interpretations according to whatever each author creates. Little booklets are usually included with each deck that show the author’s intended meanings. Because oracle cards are less rigid than tarot, they give you more flexibility in how you interpret them. Oracle cards help you access divine information just as tarot cards do, and neither divination system is better than the other, just different. All that matters is what works for you. Some readers use both tarot and oracle cards in their readings.

Make Your Choice
To prepare yourself to make your choice, position yourself before them, stand quietly, and center yourself. Gaze at the variety of decks before you. Which ones call to you? Pick each one that draws you in, and working with one deck at a time, see how it makes you feel while you hold it. Does it raise your energy, making you feel good? Does it lower your energy and make you feel blah? Does it make you feel nothing at all? The right oracle deck is the one that draws you in and speaks to your soul. Asking for Guidance
When you are ready to ask for answers from your oracle deck, place yourself somewhere quiet and meditate for a little bit. My favorite tarot deck is the Universal Waite tarot (which is a more beautifully colored Rider Waite deck.) I tried many decks when I first began reading, and I’ve always come back to this one. It just speaks to me. You may find that one deck is your foundation deck in that it is the one you most frequently turn to for guidance.
