The Power of Tarot
Hello! It’s nice to see you again.
Did you know that cartomancy is a fancy word for doing divinatory readings with regular playing cards?
This practice spread throughout Europe in the fourteenth century thanks to the Roma, but it can be traced back even further to the Middle East. Each card has its own meaning, and when cards are grouped together in spreads, the meaning deepens.
So, think of it this way…
Clubs are Wands, Diamonds are Pentacles, Hearts are Cups, and Spades are Swords. It’s so easy to see how Tarot evolved from playing cards. Or, was it that playing cards evolved from Tarot?
Frankly, I have seen it cited both ways.
The thing I know for sure is that we enter the energy of each suit, and the mythology opens up in a very similar way. The four playing card suits relate back to the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, and so do the Minor Arcana suits of Tarot.
These cards feature artwork by Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), a leader in the Art Nouveau movement which swept Europe in the 1890’s.They are filled with images of enchantment and personification!
They portray the states of consciousness represented by each tarot card, I feel, although they are “ordinary” playing cards. Each Tarot card stands for a specific condition of human experience, and within this deck, the sensual and feminine images reveal the archetypal energies which correspond with Tarot.
So, let’s enter together now, and see what the week ahead holds for us!
March 8 – Sunday
King of Spades (Swords)
Spades (Swords) suggest challenges. So, what is the challenge here? The woman is shown in luxurious surroundings, pregnant, and enjoying leisure. The scenery is autumnal and earthy.
But, this is a King card, so “male” archetypal energy is in play, although, outside of the image. Could this be a “gilded cage” for this woman?
More broadly, this may not be about a literal male person at all. But, the “king” means whoever holds the cards in the situation.
The challenge here is to enjoy the benefits of this relationship with the “king”, but never become dependent, or lose the self.
The card comes up today because it relates to a situation in your life; perhaps a choice or an agreement. It could be domestic, or work related. The card is saying to count the cost before entering the situation or choosing to stay.
Is the “price” right, or is it too high? The choice is yours today.
March 9 – Monday
Ten of Hearts (Cups)
There will be cause for quiet celebration. This ten is in the suit of Hearts (Cups), and points to a definite possibility of marriage. It is a happy card.
The woman is shown relaxing in her garden, contemplating iris flowers, and enjoying some kind of reverie.
Literally, a proposal of some kind is indicated today. The card holds the energy of emotional success.
March 10 – Tuesday
Two of Hearts
A loving agreement will take place. The Crescent Moon shows just a sliver of beginning for a long-term partnership of some kind. It bodes well. Keep it a secret and let the Waxing Moon assist its growth. The figure covers her mouth as if to remind us that.
Much is promised. This could be in friendship, love, or work. “Good” is growing in the situation which comes up for you today.
March 11 – Wednesday
Ace of Clubs (Wands)
Something more to celebrate! A seated woman enjoys a glass of champagne.
The Ace in this suit shows a new venture or idea is forming in your mind. A new cycle of health, wealth, and happiness is starting for you today. You will hear about it through a written communication.
March 12 – Thursday
Two of Clubs (Wands)
Now is the time to plan out how you will achieve the ideas you had yesterday. Remember to do this in a relaxed way. The planning will go on for a while.
It’s okay to discard and add new methods and strategies. The number two suggests the early stages of something great. It will take time to build it.
March 13 – Friday
Two of Diamonds (Pentacles)
Financial backing comes from a place of bright abundance. Our sun-bathing figure shows a flush of rosy wealth on her second chakra.
Something life-giving, powerful, and energetic (like the sun), is showering her with gold. She smiles at it, shielding her eyes with her hand, because she is blinded by the brightness of the energy.
The card’s message for you today is that powerful support will be growing for you!
March 14 – Saturday
Two of Spades (Swords)
An obstacle could arise today. You may just not want to deal with it. The picture on this card shows us that the woman is turning away, and covering her eyes.
But, the card says, too: It is a minor obstacle. Work systematically and all will be smoothed over in short order. Then, proceed toward your goal.
Conclusion: Why so many “twos” in the spread this week? The theme of the week seems to be about relationships in all its forms.
It is a time of beginning and planning in harmony with Mercury’s retrograde in Pisces. It will station this week and begin to recover forward direction and momentum.
So, don’t rush things. Your intuition will be heightened. Messages will come from Spirit, and through works of art or music.
A Fun Spread to Try: Gypsy Spider Web (Twenty-one card spread)
This is a complex past, present, and future spread. It contains three rows of seven cards each, to weave a story about the past, present, and future of your question. It’s kind of a mini “Grand Tableau” because it reads many layers of meaning in a situation.
You can apply this spread to relationships, career, a specific project, or a specific relationship. It will look at how you and other people think, feel, and behave in a situation, and connects past, present, and future.
It uses traditional playing cards for the reading, but traditional Tarot would work great, too! Remember the cross-connection between tarot and playing cards.
Shuffle the deck thoroughly and lay the cards face down on the table in front of you. Concentrate in a strong and focused way to become clear about what you most need to know about the issue.
When you are ready, draw seven cards sequentially, placing them face- downwards, left to right in a horizontal row. This is the past of this situation.
Next, pull seven more cards and form a horizontal row of seven cards directly below the above row representing the past. Row two will represent the present.
Finally, pull a third row of seven cards, placing them in the bottom row, left to right, horizontally. Row three is about the future. This row will tell us how the situation will evolve going forward.
Some card readers like to select a Significator for the Questioner and other key people in the situation. Usually, though, they will show up in context in the course of the reading.
When that happens, it can be useful validation for the information you’re receiving. It’s kind of a cross-reference to signal that you are on the right track.
Well, thanks for joining me today. Hope to see you again!
